6 month old suspected Covid

Hi all,

I tested positive for Covid via lateral flow test yesterday and today and am waiting on a PCR. I've had symptoms since Sunday night, and my 6 month DD has been quite unwell since Monday. I've not tested her but because her symptoms are very similar to mine, I presume she is also positive. I am trying to wear a mask when I'm around her so as not to increase her viral load.

Her temp reached 39 degrees on Monday, 38 on Tuesday and yesterday it was fine. We've been treating her with Calpol but she screams and cries whenever we try to give it to her. Today, despite having calpol every day her temp is back up to 38. She really isn't herself, has been crying on and off since Monday, not sleeping well, not playing and crying in her sleep, I feel so awful for her. I'm on the phone to the GP but it's a long wait so does anyone have any advice in the meantime? Has anyone else's babies been similar or had Covid? How was it?

Call 111 for advice. 39 is very high for a baby that age.
I had covid last month, my 9m old started to display the same symptoms. Then after one whole night of hysterical crying, dripping with sweat, temperature, ibuprofen calpol doing nothing, I did a LFT just using the snot from his nose and it was positive.

Ah so that was Monday and she did go to the out of hours GP who just confirmed she had a virus in her nose and throat, obviously at that point we didn't know which virus as she wasn't really coughing or sneezing at that point.

Can I ask how long your baby took to recover from covid? And was there anything in particular you did to help?

Glad to hear, it's awful seeing them experience their first illness let alone covid. My LOs temp picked before the sneezing and coughing too. 3 days of strong symptoms and misery. Then 3 days of a regular cold. We gave ibuprofen all the way through. I've also signed up to an NCT baby first aid course because it have me such a fright!

No covid advice I'm afraid but If you administer the calpol through a bottle teat she might accept it more willingly?

Or the syringe into the cheek rather than towards the throat.

So I did an LFT just now using just one nostril and it's a strong positive Sad I already knew but it's still sad Sad

We don't have baby ibuprofen at home - will have to put some in our Asda order. She's been super sleepy today, she turned 6 months today and has spent most of the day asleep. She's not crying/whinging as she was for 3 days prior so I hope she will be on the mend soon.

I’m sorry you’re both unwell, wish you both a speedy recovery!

I had Covid when my DD was 8 months old so not quite as young and she ended up getting it too. Thankfully she wasn’t as bad as I was with it, was just like a bad cold and she recovered a lot quicker than I did (id say a week or so?)

If she’s becoming sleepy she needs checked out. The link I’ve shared has an excellent traffic light system for deciding what to do. Sorry she’s sick Sad

Thank you for the heads up - doctors said they'd call by 3.30 today but they never did! I think I will call 111 as I am worried about her - tomorrow will be day 5 of temperature if she still has one, and even when her fever reduced today she was still very sleepy.

@Vicky1989x thank you! Glad to hear it wasn't too bad for your little one. I seem to be okay, I've been double jabbed but obv DD hasn't so it pains me to see her so unwell Sad

How's your wee one today?

Snickers94 · 17/12/2021 14:48

She's doing a lot better, thank you for asking Smile temperature is normal, we even managed to feed her a teaspoon or two of mashed banana which is her first ever food! She still looks more tired than usual but seems to have a bit more energy so we will take each day at a timeSmile
