CMPA - worse before it gets better?

Hello! I'm looking for advice/experience on my daughter's possible CMPA allergy.

A bit of background! She's 5 and a half months old, has always had a bit of silent reflux - some days worse than others, particularly when she was born, but it has improved as she's got older. She was a little dot when born, only 5 pounds, and is still teeny now! So we always thought her reflux was linked to her low birthweight.

About a month ago we noticed that her poos had changed - they were suddenly green, runny and had a cheesy/vinegar smell 🤮. We paid a visit to the GP who suggested CMPA and to cut dairy out 😭. Didn't give us much advice or what to expect, but I did some research and ditched dairy!

I'm about 2 and a half weeks in and I feel like she is worse rather than better! Her tummy makes so much noise during feeds now, she is incredibly windy at night which is waking her and her silent reflux has become awful again - constant gulping, coughing and clear spit up. The only thing that has changed are her nappies are their usual colour, although still explosive and occasionally smelly!

If you've made it this far thank you 🙈!! I'm just interested to hear other mum's experiences - is it normal for things to get worse before they get better??

Are you bf? Have you swapped dairy for soya? About 50% of babies with CMPA are also allergic to soya.

If she is 5-6 months old what formula have they put her on? You will notice that most CMPA formulas still have milk in. She may need a milk which literally contains 0% dairy.
My little boy has CMPA and it was hell of n earth until they changed his milk.
Even the Aptamil Pepti milk has milk in!

As pp above said many of the dairy free formulas are just less dairy, many also have soya in. Neocate is a totally broken down formula with no soya.
It’s not unusual for an improvement and then the body twigs it’s still milk and starts reacting again.

@mayblossominapril @WJM2020 should've said, she's EBF!

@Fallagain no I've not, been mainly having oatly - which I had a lot before cutting dairy completely!

Hmm. There are two schools of thought one this one is it takes 6 weeks and other is it takes 48 hours to see a difference.

Lots of people find oat products make them windy.

There is a really good CMPA breastfeeding group.

I mix fed at the beginning with my second after her cmpa was diagnosed. Soya is in so much food including a lot of bread. Egg is the next one on the list.
They do say if the guy has become very inflamed it can take a few weeks for it all to settle down.
Has the gp referred you to the dieticians?

Shmerlock · 15/12/2021 21:02

@mayblossominapril nope she didn't, just advised me cutting out dairy and ringing her back in 3 weeks! No guidance, no advice nothing!

Ask her for a referral as it was the dieticians not the doctors that solved the problems with both of mine.
It will probably be a telephone appointment

Shmerlock · 15/12/2021 21:32

@mayblossominapril aah right, I think I'll request it when I see her next week

I’m at the start of this journey with my 8 week old - green poops for a week.
I’ve just started cutting out dairy.
However I have read that the green poops and other symptoms could be linked to a fast let down and over supply meaning baby isn’t getting much hind milk

@Kona84 that's interesting, thank you for sharing! Our biggest issue is her silent reflux, it's flared up so badly since cutting dairy. Today has been horrendous, screaming and crying since 2pm. She's currently still on me after screaming in pain for the last two hours 😭 it breaks my heart. I can hear her gulping and swallowing liquid and then the screaming starts

I’m treating the fast let down by expressing for a few minutes before feeding her she hasn’t needed burping as much today.

My baby screams when she has wind sometimes takes us 10-20 mins to get it all up
