Where to sit baby during the day?

Hi, so might seem like a silly question but I’m 30 weeks pregnant and keep wondering about this.
So when baby is newborn, I’ve read it’s not good for them to be in the “sat” position for long (either sat up in parents arms or in a bouncer for too long). So when baby is awake and not in the bassinet, or sat in the bouncer or with me - where do they sit? Surely if they are led down all the time the will get a flat head even with tummy time?? 😂 because you can only do that for a certain time too…and what about when baby gets to the fussy age where they can’t sit up on their own yet but they don’t want to lie down…and again when baby is crawling about and can sit, but I need to do some cleaning etc, where could I put them if not in a highchair?

My baby is just over three months but in the very early days she spent a lot of time in her rocker (reclined position) and also in a sling. I know a lot of people use a moses basket and I never bothered but sometimes think it would have been easier.
Now she's a bit older she still spends a fair amount of time in the rocker and sat on my knee or flat on her playmat.
You'll work it out!

I wouldn’t call it ‘sit’ baby cos they won’t sit for few months haha
I either hold my baby (velcro baby), or put in a bouncer (max 30min) or lay flat on blanket/mat/pram.
I guess to prevent flat head just hold baby or use a sling (I use it up to 2hrs) and tummy time ofc

Newborn: baby will be asleep majority of the day (in my experience) so wear in a carrier / lie them down / use a bouncer for a few mins / cuddle them. You might not get much else done. That's ok.

when they get a lil bigger we LOVE our Hauck 2 in 1 highchair we use - it has a baby seat which is like a lounger. We've used it everyday.

Meant to add that in terms of housework I usually had her in the sling. She'll let me leave her with her toys now but initially it was just easier to have her strapped to me...could do most things except unload the washing machine!

Namechangegardens · 14/12/2021 22:12

Newborns sleep A LOT (where they sleep is a different matter - some can be put down in bed, some will only be "worn" e.g. in a sling (definitely recommend one of those for both in house and out and about) - so for the first 8 weeks anyway you won't really need to "leave" baby awake anywhere (that was my experience anyway).

Mine is now 13 weeks and spends his awake time in the bouncer/on playmat/on our knees, and sleeps in crib, pram or sling.

As for tummy time, we were VERY minimal with ours as he can't stand it - neck strength was slightly behind but more than caught up now, and no issues with head shape.

EnidFrighten · 14/12/2021 22:13

Depends what age you mean. As tiny newborns they want to be on you the whole time they're awake. In your arms or held against your shoulder etc.

To begin with, there's not much time that isn't feeding, sleeping, or moving between the two. They won't be awake and looking for entertainment!

Good luck, you'll figure it all out

Just10moreminutesplease · 14/12/2021 22:13

When my baby was small he was either being held, in his bassinet, or on his mat on the floor. He did have a reclining chair but I only used that to shower really.

Pre-crawling he was either held, or on his play mat where we would also practice sitting up. Sensory toys are good for keeping them entertained. Then once he could sit we added the highchair as an option.

Now he crawls he’s everywhere Grin. I just take him with me when I’m cleaning (unless it’s not safe to do so, in which case me and DH do it once he’s in bed… ideally I’d do it while he naps but he hates napping in his cot through the day).

Daytime mine went in a Sleepyhead when tiny

Seafog · 14/12/2021 22:13

As infants, either in the sling, swing or basket.
Once they could sit up, we had a play pen I moved from room to room.

ZenNudist · 14/12/2021 22:13

Baby bouncer a lot of the time. If you're lucky. You're feeding and changing them a lot so not much time to just be sat for ages. I did get a few box sets in between feeding and baby in bouncer.

We used to make a big deal of tummy time but they learn to hold their heads up sonehow. My ds did not like being put on his tummy as first.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 14/12/2021 22:16

Neither of mine would entertain sitting or lying down anywhere that wasn’t on me for several weeks! I really couldn’t put them down much so they spent a lot of time sleeping on my chest or in the carrier. You can’t hold them too much when they’re little and they sleep most of the time anyway. If you’ve got a bouncer and a cot/ bassinet (and a sling if that’s your thing) you don’t need anything more.

We inherited a Jumperoo from family and I have to say it was quite useful when they got a bit bigger (around 5/6 months). I am afraid once they are crawling and then walking it is game over and keeping them contained and out of mischief becomes a full-time job 😬😅

AliceW89 · 14/12/2021 22:20

IME. On you/in your arms 24/7. For the first few years months weeks days Grin

seaborgium · 15/12/2021 10:37

DS spent most of the day feeding at that age. When he wasn’t feeding or having a nappy change he would play in his bouncer, on his playmat or in his cot. His witching hour was from 6pm to about 8pm and for those two hours we had to walk around with him in a sling or over our shoulders because he’d cry if you put him down. The rest of the day he was fine with being put down as long as he had a good view and lots of attention.

Thegreencup · 15/12/2021 10:42

We had the carry cot down stairs and used to put them in that when they were asleep.

To begin with when they're awake, you're feeding, changing and then holding them.

A bouncer is good to sit them in if you want to make sure they're safe. We mainly used a play mat. Put some toys around them and just let them kick about. You can get the gyms that have dangling toys and play music. But TBH my kids were happy enough just watching what was going on around them and chewing their hand.

AegonT · 15/12/2021 20:35

My first baby liked to be held pretty constantly. My second baby would lie on a play mat looking at toys hung on the arch above or spend a bit of time in the bouncy seat or swing seat.

bubblebath62636 · 15/12/2021 20:38

Mine still goes in her moses basket (6 months) or on a blanket/bouncer

AliveAndSleeping · 15/12/2021 22:34

Mostly in his play gym or just on a blanket on the floor. He doesn't do much tummy time either as he hates it but so far his head seems fine. Not flat.

I mean, when ds was a newborn he was either asleep in his basket or in my arms when awake. He didn’t even sit in his bouncer until 4 weeks old. If he was awake and I needed to do something then I’d put him back in his basket and he was happy to kick around (when he wasn’t he was in the sling). This isn’t true of all babies though!

CointreauVersial · 15/12/2021 23:33

Aww, it's funny the things you fret about when you're pregnant. I remember getting home from the hospital with DS, we parked his car seat in the middle of the living room, looked at each other, and said NOW what do we do with him? Grin

Newborns go wherever you put them - mostly being held, in a bouncer, sleeping, or just on a mat on the floor under a baby gym - really you will be fine. And no, they won't get a flat head.

daisyjgrey · 16/12/2021 00:12

My daughter spent most of her time in a sling.
