Receptive language at 12 months

Does anyone know what's expected from babies at this age? My 12 month old responds well to his name, knows the word no and can look at/point to a few (maybe 5) objects or people when asked eg cup/ball/daddy etc. He will only follow commands when paired with a gesture (eg give me the xxxx when I'm holding hand out.)

He doesn't yet have any words but lots of babbling. He points to request and share interest, gives, shows, waves, claps and reaches to be picked up.

Does this sound on track in terms of his communication?

Yes that sounds normal. Receptive vocab at this age would be in the region of 10-50 words usually. It can also be hard to determine what they actually understand because it generally requires children to follow commands to get the answer right (point to the rabbit!) and fairly often they know what you’re saying but just don’t feel like doing it 🤷‍♀️ hence why in research studies we often use more sensitive measures. He will know more than you think!

Thank you @Newnews that's good to know. It seems like his knowledge varies as some days he seems to be able to point out lots of things and other days nothing (but maybe that's because, as you say, he just doesn't feel like it and is sick of me asking?) I have dreadful PNA and worry so much about things like regressions and maybe he is losing understanding.

They're so busy learning at this age (my DS is a similar age) that I think sometimes they forget what they can do because they're focused on learning whatever new skill they've decided they want to do. DS stopped waving a couple of weeks ago then he learnt to cruise and then started waving again.
