Hiya my 8 week old is very congested.. he seems to be very uncomfortable becauseof it .. i feel like he doesn'teat as much as he just get too tired with the snotty nose and he can't sleep properly.. iv been doctors she said hes breathing fine and doesn't seem like hes got any infection but prescribed me antibiotics in case but they not helping anyway.. tried nasal spray no luck now trying the nasal droos and still nothing.. using the nasal aspirator but got scared last night as i sucked in bloody snot came out and it wasn't just a string of blood .. it was a red raw snot so not sure if some vein vessels poped as he sneezes a lot or is it because im using nasal aspirator.. i just need some advice if anyone had a congested newborn ? This been going on for about 3 weeks but last week seemed to make him uncomfortable thats why i went to gp but nothing is helping

My newborn is suffering with a blocked nose and I’ve tried everything you have - but I did try a humidifier last night which seemed to have helped massively

Solidarity, mine is the same atm. This is his second bout of congestion since he was born but it's worse this time. Oddly nobody else in our household has been ill recently either. His sleep wasn't affected so far but tonight he's been waking more than usual so assuming that's why, am shattered! We find some relief for him using snuffle babe vapour oil in a bowl of hot water in room. Also feeding him in upright positions makes him feed better too. Not sure how you're feeding but if breastfeeding I am finding most success with leaning back and having him leaning forwards on me tummy to tummy upright, legs straddling my leg. Like koala hold but personally find it more comfortable if I recline.

Congestion can be a sign of allergy - how are his nappies? Any reflux or vomiting? Rashes? Cow milk protein allergy (CMPA) can cause congestion in babies - this site might be helpful to see whether or not it might be a problem:

If breast feeding, try putting a few drops of breast milk in nose before feeds/sleeping. If not breast feeding use saline drops instead.
Also try steaming up the bathroom before bedtime.
I was given the tip of hanging wet laundry in the bedroom rather than buying a humidifier.
It's very easy for newborns to get congested due to the shape and size if their nose and nasal passages, plus they are being exposed to dust and other sort of particles for the 1st time. GP probably not concerned because there are no other symptoms but not particularly helpful if it's disrupting sleep and feeding.

Not read other posts so hope I’m not repeating but here’s what worked for mine:

Calpol saline drops for nose (check what age from as I don’t remember)
Humidifier with filter to catch any airborne particles
Not putting heating on so much as dries the air. But humidifier will help with this.
Baby vicks

He doesn't have any of allergy symptoms.. he sneezing and coughs a little but that because of his snotty nose so can't be allergies

Have him in the bathroom with you when you shower for humidification
Bowl of water next to radiator in bedroom to keep air moist
Saline drops, leave for a few mins, then use aspirator
Use saline drops regularly through day (don't use aspirator too much though as it can cause excess snot production)
I did use snufflebabe vapour rub with ours at 8 weeks although it's only licensed for use over 3 months (as is almost everything)
Ditto calpol plug in
Tilt head end of crib up so baby is on a slight slant (head up)

It's really tough but will clear. Hope he is better soon.
