Why do some parents still use Talc?

Tests of talc products, including Johnson & Johnson's popular baby powder, have revealed they can contain asbestos fibers. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that can be caused by talcum powder contaminated with asbestos. www.asbestos.com/products/talcum-powder/

It's not hard to dry your baby with a towel. Hmm

I don't want to breathe in your carcinogen or for my baby to breathe it in either Angry

Just to wade in and say that coffee is not carcinogenic.

Years and years ago we had a health visitor come round who used to work in a hospital in some role I can't remember what. And she went mad at my DM for using talc on the baby and said she's seen when people die from certain illnesses their ovaries have contained talc and attributed it to ovarian cancer. Never used it since.

I don’t like the feel of talc. Same with dry shampoo powder. Would it not make baby’s skin tacky?

A health visitor saw inside dead women’s ovaries? Wow, they were more thorough in them days.

@RobinPenguins Do you struggle reading the actual comments or are you just normally so ignorant?. I don't know what her previous job was before she became a health visitor but I'm guessing she saw it that way.
Weird comment to make Confused.

No more ignorant or weird than your entire comment.

Many scientists and pathologists called as a result of various lawsuits have found at best a potential link between talc and ovarian cancers but no, a health visitor in the 70s has definitely seen loads of cancerous ovaries are stuffed full of it.

Please.

Bollocks.

@Daisyv2

Fair enough, I assumed it was that people didn't realise the links but it appears they don't care which is sad.
I think it’s more that they don’t think the risks are sizeable or real. It’s not at all clear cut. We use it on feet and legs on the beach to dry off sand. In no way is there enough talc floating around in the air for it to be an inhalation risk there, and we also don’t ever use it on genitals areas, which seems to be the other potential risk area of discussion.

Our baby likes a blow dry.

Kitkatkit122 · 12/12/2021 10:38

My baby suffers from eczema. We use talc to absolutely make sure her neck and back of legs are dry. Rather that than never ending scratching.

Notbluepeter · 14/12/2021 21:27

J&J lost a class action lawsuit in the states which is why they can't sell it over here anymore.
Yes the cancer it may cause is rare. But I have more concerns about the proximity of where talc is mined near asbestos to ever use talc on a baby.
Plus corn flour does the exact same job and is harmless!

CantBeAssed · 14/12/2021 21:34

If we were to heed all the media reports on what is the latest cancer link we would never eat again!
