Hi everyone, I'm new here and looking for some/any advice.
I am raising 3 of my grandchildren and one of them, the 14 yr old boy, is really having problems in school. After many months of being bullied and no action taken until we involved the police, he has really lost faith in his school and teachers. I've tried to talk to them about this and it seems they don't really care. The classes are chaotic with no control or discipline and kids doing whatever the hell they want and arguing with teachers and he has started to butt up against them himself. For these reasons I have decided to take him out at Christmas and will home school him.
I have NO IDEA where to start with this other than informing the school and the LEA. Any advice or tips greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

As he's 14, he'll be coming up to GCSEs. You'll need to get copies of each GCSE exam syllabus and resources to use to teach those subjects. Do you feel capable of teaching him 10 subjects including Maths, English and Science to GCSE? You'll also need to find out how to register him to take the exams. Your LA might be able to give some guidance and look for home Ed UK Facebook groups for parents/carers for support and ideas.

I'm not touting for business as I'm fully booked but if you research HLS Mentors on Facebook l, I have a group of home edders attached

There is a home ed board so maybe ask MN to move your post there. There are online schools like inter high but it all depends what you want home schooling to look like for your family.

Hi Cat, there is a great Home Ed board right here - maybe ask Mumsnet to move your thread?

There are also a couple of big and very useful Facebook groups with lots of resources, which will help you find local groups and take it from there.

I'm sure you have considered this, but are there any resources available to you for private education? It doesn't sound like school in general is a problem for him so much as that specific school. Home education is quite a drastic step, and you will have to do a lot of very hard work to get him through his GCSE's and A Levels.

Another option is moving house to get him into the catchment of a smaller and more nurturing, or just simply SAFER secondary.

There are also online only independent schools - not always cheap, but a good compromise.
