Weaning … steaming veg

Hi

I am just about to start weaning my 6 month old. I know you need to steam veg to keep the goodness… what’s the easiest way to do this… is there a gadget for the microwave or do I buy an electric steaming unit. What sorts of foods did you start with?

Metal colander over a pan of boiling water with a lid over.

But really, as long as you don't boil it for hours, and just use a little water, it will be fine.

Oh really, thank youSmile

We have a multi-layer stainless steel steamer you use on the hob. It's a pot at the bottom, has two removable steamer layers and then a lid. You can use it as a pot or a steamer so it's really useful

Ours is similar to this and gets used quite a lot and we're well past the weaning stage

We have a steamer pan. You can, if you want, boil something such as pasta while steaming the veg so it's energy-efficient too. Or you can get steamer inserts for any normal pan. This sort of thing (random website, they're widely available afaik)

We had an electric steamer - it was amazing when we were weaning our DS.

We started with 'chip sized' pieces of butternut squash, and sweet potato. We also did similar sized pieces of carrot and potato . We moved onto broccoli.

We also used the steamer to cook chicken and fish.

It meant that if we were having a curry or a stir fry etc I would cook the rice in the steamer for us with plain veg and meat for the dc.

I found we cut do a really wide variety of veg for the dc with very little effort.

Metal colander on top of saucepan with boiling water in; saucepan lid on top.

You don’t ned to buy any gimmicky stuff unless you want to.

I'm on the colander on top of saucepan train as well

Lovelydovey · 08/12/2021 22:12

Yep we have a steamer pan for the hob too - still used daily 12+ years later.

MelonTits · 08/12/2021 22:20

A microwave steamer is way more efficient if all you’re doing is veg - the multi layered ones are better for meals with various elements. I use my micro steamer very day without fail.

SR Nutrition on Instagram is fantastic for all things weaning, she's been on countless shows and helped Joe Wicks and Stacey Solomon wean their children.

A bowl with a plate on top as a lid can be used to steam food in the microwave. Just need a small amount of water too

Same here. I'm long past the weaning babies stage but my hob steamer is still used all the time.

Sistema microwave steamer. Still use it now 7 years later for zapping peas and sweetcorn for when the kids have fish fingers and chips for tea.

We bought a steamer from Asda that you put on the hob and it has 3 little pans on it. I bought it around 4 and a half years ago when I started weaning my little boy and I paid £10 for it. We still have it now and it's used every Sunday when I make a roast. I'll be using it again too when I come to start weaning my baby girl in April 😊

Chely · 09/12/2021 19:15

We have loads of pots like this...

We just stick chopped veg in a microwavable jug with a small amount of water.

That's the link to it 😊 I'm not sure how to upload a photo on here yet haha.

They are brilliant though, it saves space on the hob when cooking a roast too 😂

@mummyof2littleones that's great thanks😀
