Swallowed nappy sack

Hi! I'm totally panicking. I was changing my baby's nappy and he picked up the nappy sack and was waving it around. Stupidly I let him as it kept him still while I changed him. Normally the nappy sacks are kept well away from him and only taken out when having a nappy change, as we were. The next thing I know he's put the corner of it in his mouth and pulled it with his teeth. I quickly grabbed it off him but a tiny bit was missing and he seemed to be chewing. I tried to get him to open his mouth but he thought it was a game and clamped it shut. He did seem to struggle at all with swallowing anything and didn't cough etc. I panicked and gave him a load of water to wash it down to make sure it wasn't in his air ways. He has had about 4 oz of water and porridge since and has made no sign of choking etc. What would you do? Thank you - I feel awful x

How much nappy sack do you think be might have swollen? I'm thinking if it's the size of a 5p then dont worry. An entire sac and I'd be going to A&E. So where are you on that scale?

duggee1 · 05/12/2021 07:39

About the size of my pinky nail - really small. I feel so stupid letting him wave it around f when it's clearly a hazard 😩

It’s very thin plastic. I’d imagine it will pass through ok. Kids eat lots of weird stuff. How old is your baby?

I was paranoid about nappy sacks and always wrapped after the nappy change. But these things do happen. I’m sure it will be ok.

If he's swallowed it without choking / gagging and you're sure it's gone down, then it's fine. It will just pass through. Just check his mouth to make sure they he did swallow it.
I'm sure you know this already but these very thin plastic bags are super dangerous (as a suffocation risk) so don't let him play with them again - even supervised - as you don't want to encourage him in any way.

duggee1 · 05/12/2021 07:44

He's 11 months. I am sure it's gone down - it was about an hour ago an has since had 4oz of water, porridge and toast so has done lots of swallowing since!

I wouldn't worry at all. You'll probably see it in his nappy at some stage.

duggee1 · 05/12/2021 07:49

Thanks so much everyone. I've got this awful image of it being stuck somewhere but he's had so much to eat and drink since that surely it's gone 🤷🏼‍♀️. I'm just worried about plastic being in his tummy etc but I'll just keep an eye for it.

I’d only worry if he choked - which he didn’t! It will pass through with no issues.

Dd once ate a whole slug at that age. I’d only turned around to put the lid on the sandpit and looked back to see her chewing 🤢

Choccorocco · 05/12/2021 08:01

I’m sure he’ll be fine. My toddler ate a 5p coin - I completely freaked out and took him to hospital (seems a bit daft now that I think about it but I was in a state of panic). They checked to make sure it had not blocked his airways but when the X-ray showed it sitting in his tummy, they were fine. Gave me a very odd look when I suggested that I poke through his poop to make sure it had come through and told me that would be unnecessary but to feel free to do it if it would make me feel better. :-)

Exhausteddog · 05/12/2021 08:05

@Choccorocco

My DS swallowed a foreign object (bigger than 5p) when he was 6. I took him to hospital and they did the xray to check it hasn't lodged anywhere (it hadnt) but they asked us to check his poo to ensure it has passed. Blush

MumUndone · 05/12/2021 08:38

I really wouldn't worry if it's gone down, will just come out the other end.

duggee1 · 05/12/2021 08:45

Thanks everyone! I'm a FTM and just freaked out. I'm keeping a close eye on him to see if it's not lodged somewhere but he seems absolutely fine so far. I'll just keep an eye out in his poop 💩 x

He'll be fine, don't worry. I'll bet he's eaten loads of stuff you haven't even noticed. My daughter swallowed a plum stone at not much older than your bab, and it just came out the other end. A tiny bit of thin plastic won't cause any issues.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 05/12/2021 08:57

Well my DD swallowed a section of newspaper when she was crawling around. I had no idea until a small part emerged from her bottom and I tugged the rest out!!! Honestly it has about 15cm long and folded up like a roll. Confused

HavfrueDenizKisi · 05/12/2021 08:57

She's 14 now and had no other problems since!

LizzieSiddal · 05/12/2021 09:01

If an object is solid like a coin or small toy, it will probably pass through ok.

As it’s a bit of plastic bag and flimsy, I would get medical advice just to be 100% certain.

WaterBottle123 · 05/12/2021 09:11

He'll be fine! My husband ate a nappy pin when he was a baby!

Omg. I bet that was a bit freaky Grin

A friend of mine moved house and packed her stuff in green plastic wrapping. The next day her baby's nappy was full of green bits of it, she felt terrible but baby was fine. Mine ate a woody nightshade Berry I didn't spot growing in the garden. Had to spend 6 hours in A and E being observed, she was fine, I sobbed. Kids do stuff like this, don't he too hard on yourself x

YummyBelicious · 05/12/2021 09:22

One of mine ate some of the fallen strands off of tinsel once. Only knew when I found glitzy poo 😁

MintyCedric · 05/12/2021 09:28

I'm sure it will be fine. A friend of a friends son manage to each 6 inches of tinsel at nursery and no-one realised until it appeared in his nappy!

HavfrueDenizKisi · 05/12/2021 09:51

@teaandtoastwithmarmite it was a surprise to say the least!! Especially as I pulled and it kept coming. DD highly embarrassed about this story now.....Grin

I can imagine ha ha

BertieBotts · 05/12/2021 10:16

That will be fine, it will pass through. But def keep them out of reach in future, the danger isn't that they will eat them, it's because they are so thin they can very easily cover the mouth/nose and get stuck and cause suffocation.

I tend to put them up on a high shelf and only use them for really stinky poos - wet nappies or tiny baby poo I just roll up in the nappy itself. Much safer :)

popapoppadum · 05/12/2021 10:20

My 8 month old swallowed a holographic Peppa pig sticker that he'd nicked off his big sister. It was found in his nappy and I thought it was blood at first and panicked. Oh no, it's just Peppa's red dress...
