Ideas for stuffing nighttime Toddler nappy please?? Champion piddler....

Am attempting to move over to washables for night time for my 2.5yr DD but am finding it hard to add enough absorbancy. I'm using Nature Babies stuffables as these have nice leg gussets and it's easier to prepare the nappy, do up 2 poppers and pull it up than wrestle her into a 2 piece system when she doesn't want to lie on the ground like a baby.

But I can't stuff it with enough to hold all the wee! I've tried a large bamboo insert plus a microfibre kitchen cloth - leaks. A 3 layer terry booster + microfibre cloth - leaks. A prefold + terry & fleece booster - all leak! I have also tried a Fuzzybunz stuffable but this was worse as there is no gusset at the legs. Even with the Nature Babies the elastic around the legs gets wet and the wee then wicks onto her PJ bottoms, and I'm getting the hump with not only washing the nappies but her pyjamas and sheet every day. She's uncomfortable, smells like a mouse and I'm feeling like a bit of an idiot for attempting this, I've had it with disposables but they are also so alluring right now. If anyone has a failsafe recipe for holding the output of a champion piddler at night, please let me know. And yes, I take her to the loo before bed and then put the nappy on.

Stuffies don't work for my dd for nights (or even for naps for that matter). I found a shaped nappy under an airflow wrap or wool longies (like little wool trousers) does better for night.

The only insert I wouls use in a pocket nappy at night would be a 60x60 bamboo terry square - far superior to large bamboo booster and prefolds I have tried. They can come up quite thick but they are so soft and flexible my DD seems to be comfiest in them

Thanks for those ideas, I'll keep trying. I just don't want to end up spending more in the next few months thank we would on the next year of disposables.

I don't know stuffables, but sounds like they're overstuffed and leaking as a result. Are they designed as nightnappies? I'm using a combo of various things e.g. 2 nappies over each other plus a bamboo insert (usually bambineo + sandys) or a fluffle with 2 bamboo inserts (folded) plus the fluffle one. Is hemp more absorbent than bamboo, I forget.
Also when is she having a last drink at night, perhaps make it just a little earlier?

My DS is also a very heavy wetter, particularly at night. I use terry nappies, with a "kite" fold, and another one pad folded on top for nighttime. This gives plenty of thickness between the legs, and at the front, where it's needed most. I always turn up the edge of the nappy for a neater fit and better containment, and put plastic pants over the top. I've never had any leaks, but it's important to make sure all the nappy is inside the pants, because if any is sticking out it will cause leaks. I recently got some pull-on plastic pants by Disana, which are nice and roomy to cover a well padded bottom, but more importantly, the leg openings are nicely elasticated to contain the nappy and avoid leaks. They're a bit more expensive, but worth it. This nappy arrangement is quite bulky, but it does'nt really matter during the night, and certainly does the job from the wee point of view.

The only pocket nappies that really work with ds2 at night are minki ones. Advantage of them is that they have lots of room to stuff things in. For a heavy wetter I would go with either a terry or some microfibre inserts an then a hemp insert sandwiched into the middle to hold in the wet. HTH

Are Sandys more absorbant/ hold more than Mother-ease one size? I Have a few of these from earlier on but perhaps I should try some Sandys? I guess they take a lot longer to dry?

I suspect the pocket nappy approach, while a nice convenient idea just isn't up to the task and I'm going to have to go for the 2 part system and just insist. She's so used to whipping on a pull up it seems like going backwards to her I guess.

Thanks for your responses, it's interesting to read. The next question is.... when will she be dry at night!!!!! Then I can pack up the lot and wave byebye! (And hello to night time accidents, more wet sheets and disruptions!) What joy this all is. Merry Christmas by the way, hope yours is fun.

Ds had Tots bots shaped bamboo with a prefold over the top (ie laid into fleece wrap as a normal prefold and put over shaped nappy).

However, he's now fairly safe during the day, and at night has night-time training pants under his pjs - I lift him when we go to bed for a wee and very rarely have any wet pants, pjs or sheets to deal with. I think he normally effectively stays asleep during night time wee!

Sandys are more absorbant than the MEOS, and take a litle longer to dry IME. You could boost them as you see fit.

If you are going to go for the two parter then ellas house bumhuggers are fab teamed up with an airflow wrap. They take a while to dry but if you are only using them at night and line dry them you should only need two or three to keep you going.

I have successfully used the right type of pocket nappy + 60cm bamboo terry insert with a very heavy wetter overnight. The right pocket nappy for us was a Pocket Bots but your LO may have a different shape. You should be able to pick up one bamboo terry very cheaply (about £2.50 new) to give it a try, cheaper than splashing out on a wrap and shaped nappy. If it doesn't work, you'll probably have plenty of takers for the squareon the for sale board (me included )

DisasterZone · 19/12/2007 18:44

So who's your fave bamboo square merchant then please Coby, they do sound cheap! I'll buy some and see. I've got a Bigweeds hemp liner /terry on order, and supposedly absorbent from the start, but I'm willing to try anything like the bamboo terrys which are relatively cheap. Might try see if I can find a Sandy or bumhugger second hand to try that too.

Oh dear I didn't get on at all well with the Bigger Weeds I bought. I bought them prewashed 5 times but not used apparently and I prewashed them another 5 times before I started using them but wee just ran straight off them. Hope you have more luck and that I was just doing something horribly wrong with mine.

The bamboo squares I have aren't that fab quality wise actually, they frayed around the edges almost straight away, they were these. I did get a free nappy net with mine though which you are told to use to prewash them in. Despite the fraying they still work very well in a pocket nappy - my problem was I initially bought them to use as folded terries so the fraying was a pain. I've seen some better quality ones but I'm not sure what brand they were - possibly these which are £3.50 each. Don't forget to check out the second hand nappy sites and ask the lovely MN ladies with nappy shops too

DisasterZone · 20/12/2007 09:00

Thanks for all that Coby! It's great to benefit from others experience...which is what MN is all about, silly me....

Had success finally last night with the MEOS and airflow with a long bamboo booster, which was soaked as was most of the MEOS but the wrap is so good it kept it all in. I'd like to get the pockets I have working though so will keep trying with various inserts, the bamboo terries do sound better with less bulk for stuffing.

Thanks and have a happy christmas, if anyone wants to sell me a second hand Sandy or bumhugger in good condition I'll try them out. Or should I go whole hog and buy a new bamboo Sandy??? Have I officially got the nappy-bug??
