My little boy's nearly 9 months old, and already he seems to have tantrums! If he doesn't get what he wants, he screams, and hits things (including people). It's not even like I let him get away with anything, but can you tell a baby at this age no? I try to when he does this, but he stops for a few seconds then starts again, or he just laughs at me....! I'm starting to wonder if it's something I'm doing wrong at all. He justs seems to have such an attitude for a little boy!

It is frustration - he is just realising he wants things and can't do much about it. Is he trying to learn to crawl or walk ? You may find it eases once he cracks whatever he is working on at the moment.

And yes you can say no - but don't expect it to mean much . Just try and stay firm and calm, and don't try to pacify him too much - he has to learn his own way round problems.

He's crawling, but I think he'll be walking soon, cos he pulls himself up and walks along furniture...! It's mainly when he's having his dinner.... it's really hard to figure out, cos he sleeps quite a bit during the day, and when he gets really grumpy, I put him down to sleep because I think he's tired, but I'm really not sure....! He's never gone off to sleep without a five minute cry, which is what he normally does. But he always falls asleep... I'm just wondering if he's bored rather than tired....!?!?

I would say tired - at that age they seem to tire quickly - probably because so much is going on in their heads - lots of new skills to master.

But definitely frustration is a big factor - mine went through it before sitting up, before crawling, before walking. And always worst when they are tired or not well. Try putting him to sleep a bit before he gets really grumpy - then he may go to sleep without yelling. Mine always find it harder to fall asleep when they are overtired (unless we are in teh car when the motion helps).

At that age mine were something like - up at 6-6.30, sleep 9ish - 10.30ish, lunch 12ish, sleep 1ish-3ish, bed 6.30ish - quite a lot of sleep in total.

That sounds exactly the same....! I'm so glad yours were the same way. I felt like I was being cruel putting him down to sleep so often, but now you've said how often yours had a nap, it doens't seem so bad!

Our ds2 is 7 months and has a real temper on him! If ds1 takes a toy away from him (which unfortunately happens all the time at the moment) he goes mad - especially if he's tired - just sits there and screams blue murder! He also gets ratty if a toy rolls away, as he can't crawl yet. I think he's going to have an attitude that will drive us mad in the years to come, but that's just him...! Ds1 was much more level and calmer - even at this age - so I think a lot of it's down to personality...

jellybabe83 · 15/11/2004 09:18

Yea, it's crazy how much of a personality they have at such an early age isn't it?!?! We could tell what sort of personality Ben was going to have from about 4 months!
