Reflux advice- vomit every feed

Was hoping someone may share their experience and relieve some of my anxiety. I’ve already been to a doc and seen the community midwife

Second time mum
Baby born at 39 weeks
Exclusively breastfed

Yesterday my DD started being quite sick after every feed. Without fail she would cough gag and then vomit, quite a lot. Needless to say I was worried so took her to docs. Doc saw she was still weeing and pooping so said said just keep doing what I’m doing. He prescribed baby gaviscon

Last night I kept her upright after each feed
Burped her carefully and slowly
And when I put her in her Moses basket I listened carefully. She wasn’t sick (this was without gaviscon)
This continued into the morning. No sick but might cough but nothing happened

Until 2pm when she was sick again
Midwife came round (to check jaundice) and she said to us was typical reflux

Does throwing up after every feed sound like normal reflux? It’s quite a large amount. Should I be worried?
I never had this with DS and I get so anxious

Thank you to anyone who responds

Hi - we are currently going through this :(. At 2 weeks we went to GP for classic reflux symptoms and was prescribed gaviscon. Didn’t notice much change… Baby started at about 4 weeks vomiting a lot after every feed - a LOT! Coughing, spluttering, then vomiting. We were living in towels and had to get sick buckets in. It was absolutely heartbreaking. We went to GP after 4 days of this and the GP prescribed omeprazole for reflux. After 4 days we saw improvement (it terrifyingly got slightly worse before better) and baby kept food down finally. It was a really hard week - I asked the HV to weigh her and she had lost weight which was just so hard. Happy to say with the omeprazole working she is piling the weight on again and keeping food down. She is now 8 weeks and we are seeing slight recurrence of the vomiting but GP has upped the dose with her heavier weight - I have my fingers crossed.

I would say go to GP if you feel no improvement - they would rather see you and it be “normal baby”. Or contact HV and check weight? FYI we had no change in wet or dirty nappies but she definitely wasn’t keeping enough down.

Good luck - my heart really goes out for you - I spent that whole week in tears. So hard watching every feed come back up. What helped me was expressing and getting my husband to bottle feed her before bed to give me a break. We could see how much she took (my peace of mind) and we could make sure she didn’t guzzle it and try slow her down. I was suspicious I had quite a fast let down and was worried that wasnt helping with the choking etc - HV advised leaning back when feeding her and giving her lots of breaks. Once the omeprazole kicked in this wasn’t needed.

Sorry if this was a ramble (classic sleep deprivation here!) and I hope I said something that resonates Xxxxx

Reflux is hard!! My ds suffered. He would vomit after every bottle, sometimes projectile! It got to a point he couldnt lie flat, he had to stay upright for at least 30mins after a feed. He spent alot of time in a bouncer chair or being held on my chest. Sleep was hard, he would have a cough at night as the acid came up, also nappies smelt very strong and acidic. We found raising his cot helped. Check out wedge hog. It's a foam wedge that raises one end or the mattresses to the right angle. That helped a bit. He was also on infant gaviscon with every bottle.

My ds also had a dairy allergy. It's a long road so I wish you all the best. It does get better I promise xx

This brings back memories! My now 13 month old daughter was honestly the sickiest baby to ever exist, she vomited after every single feed, spat up every single time you picked her up. I spent the first 6 months of her life just covered in baby sick (after a while you get used to the smell Hmm). Despite this she never had weight issues and apart from a bit of fussy feeding behaviour was happy and well. Even now at 13 months she is still prone to being sick if she has a cold or cough. I’ll be honesty nothing we found helped (gaviscon, omeprazole, mammoth burping sessions, different bottles/different milks, keeping her up right……). I think some babies are just sickier than others and it’s just a matter of waiting for their esophageal sphincter to mature. If they are gaining weight I wouldn’t worry just invest in LOTS of muslins and keep a towel close by.

If you think that she is sick a lot now, you wait until she starts doing tummy time! There’s a reason why white is such a popular colour for baby clothes.

BTW there’s a well-known optical illusion in which a baby appears to be throwing up more milk than he/she consumes. Grin

DD1 threw up every single bottle she had until she was 13 months and grew out of. I’m not even exaggerating. Trying to keep enough fluids in her to keep her from getting dehydrated was a full time job. She was so bad that she was investigated for pyloric stenosis, CMPA and was in and out of paeds like a yo-yo. Vomits were huge, clothes soaking amounts each time, at least one a day was projectile, and you couldn’t move her at all without at least a small posset.

It’s really, really crap OP, so I hope you have one that outgrows it earlier than mine. Early weaning helped her to gain weight and stop dropping centiles, sitting independently reduced the coughing and spluttering and learning to walk (never crawled as couldn’t bend forwards without puking) really started phasing it all out entirely.

My advice is to buy towelling burp cloths rather than muslins, get them sitting up in the pushchair seat ASAP and take the strongest dose of meds you can if baby is suffering from the acid (we were maximum dose of ranitidine until 12 months).

Thank you all.
We’ve managed to prevent further sickness (barcone episode) by keeping her up right for 30mins so will invest in a sling

It’s scary the amount that comes up. I’ll keep a close eye on weight

Thank you all for sharing, in an odd way it has relieved me as all your little ones are thriving cx
