Toddler milks

DS is one in a couple of weeks (how did that happen?) and he should be off both bottles and formula in that time.

However quite honestly he is still fairly reliant on both, especially overnight.

I’m not sure what he’ll make of cows milks. I daresay the toddler milks on sale are a bit of a rip off but I’m wondering about seeing how he goes with them. Anyone got any advice?

My LO is 13 months and still quite reliant on milk as she isn’t much of a big eater. Our health visitor told us that follow on milk is just a fad and that cows milk is better for them. We didn’t have any problem switching to cows milk, I planned to do half formula and half milk for a while but she took to cows milk right away so didn’t bother, but maybe you could do half and half for a while, then slowly reduce the formula and add more milk to the ratio?
We still heat the cows milk up as my LO won’t take it fridge cold

Meant to add, we also still use a bottle as my DD can’t get the hang of any sort of cup or straw yet

Try the cows milk and warm it a bit. If he doesn’t take to it (understandable) then give a mix and increase the ratio overtime. So if at bedtime he usually has 8oz formula, make a 7oz bottle and top up with 1oz cows milk, next week 6oz formula with 2oz cows milk and so so on until it’s all cows milk. I’d stick with the bottles until he’s fully moved over to cows milk then I’d swap to a sippy cup.

Just give it a go and see how it goes. Being off formula & bottles at the age of 1 is guidance, certainly not set in stone from day 1 after their birthday. Take your time if you have to, there is no rush. I'd definitely suggest though not to ditch both formula and his bottle at the same time, it may be too much of a shock so just take it one step at a time.
My DS is nearly 2 and has toddler milk in the morning and before bed. I use whole cows milk for everything else (porridge, cooking, the off glass with a snack etc) but he won't actually drink it morning and eve and I'm not that bothered. He still uses his bottle first thing too as part of his routine but has also been able to drink everything else independently from an actual cup from 12m old so I don't see the harm there either. I'm certainly not suggesting that's what everyone should do, just giving an example of how it works for us :) Good luck x

There's no rush to have him off bottles and formula by exactly 12 months. When he gets to one I would start mixing cows milk and formula in his bottle, a small amount of cows milk to start with and gradually increase the amount, so he gets used to the taste. Once you've stopped the formula, then you can work on the bottles. For toddlers, I give milk in an open cup or sippy cup with breakfast and tea, from a dental point of view its not a good idea to give milk throughout the night.
The toddler formula has a very sweet, vanilla taste and that might make it more difficult to move him into cows milk, so if you choose to stick with formula, I would continue giving him the standard, first stage formula.

My son took to cow's milk no problem. I would try and see what happens. He also didn't care about dropping the bottles for a cup. You might get lucky.

He maybe happy with cow milk or you can try alpro growing up milk, either soya or oat (oat one is only from Sainsbury). He needs 350 mg of calcium a day and lots of bread and some cereals are forfeited too.

If you want to stick with formula for a bit longer the first milk is fine for him. It won't harm him
