baby immunisations

Hi,

My 3.5 month baby has just had his first round of immunisations, 6in1 and rotavirus. He was late in getting them due to being unwell after birth.

He was absolutely thriving prior to having these vaccines. Since then he was not been himself, as the days go on he seems to be more and more disinterested in feeding.
When he does feed it’s taking hours for him to take a bottle. I’m mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted from this.

I’ve heard from a few other mums that this is a common side effect. He got those vaccines a week tomorrow, i didn’t expect the side effects to last this long. I’m worried he is going to start losing weight etc. Does anybody have any answers?

He doesn’t seem too uncomfortable however whenever the bottle goes near him he starts do cry etc. He has a little more wind than usual. However he definitely is peeing and pooing like usual.

Any advice would be amazing.

Thank you

It can make them feel a bit grotty and flu-ish - mine felt icky for maybe 3 days. But it stops them having some really serious illnesses so worth persisting with. Just keep up the calpol :).

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/12/2021 23:18

Could some of it be a coincidence and your baby is now possibly teething?

I would never refuse the immunisations for mine but they are horrible. Mine was traumatised, I swear the needle gave him nightmares Sad

mumfred · 01/12/2021 23:22

It’s been almost a week and he’s still not feeling properly at all! No need for the calpol as he doesn’t have a temperature

Possibly. I just wonder if it’s more something to do with reflux now after speaking to a few other mums!

Prime time for getting colic as well. Very much doubt it’s the vaccinations. If you are worried, though, see the GP or HV.

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/12/2021 23:29

I think the advice is to give calpol for the first 24 hours after temperature or not.

mumfred · 01/12/2021 23:33

My understanding is that the vaccinations have clearly triggered or heightened some sort of stomach issue ie reflux, colic etc

He is almost a week into having his vaccinations. He has calpol for the first 24 hours.

Rotavirus didn't agree with my son if I can remember rightly. I think his nappies were a little loose for about a week.

Might you need to change teat size for the bottle if he's taking ages?

Crimsonripple · 01/12/2021 23:44

The vaccination is unlikely to have triggered reflux. I would say it's just bad timing.

mumfred · 02/12/2021 03:47

Hmm I disagree from things I’ve been reading and others I’ve been speaking to.

WheelieBinPrincess · 02/12/2021 04:53

Well then you seem convinced already OP but I honestly think it’s unlikely that the immunisations have triggered reflux, but that seems to be the opposite of what you want to hear.

KatieKat88 · 02/12/2021 05:30

Yeah the vaccines don't trigger reflux. Is he vomiting (reflux) or arching his back, screaming after feeds (silent reflux)? If so get to a GP. If not it could be colic/something else. My DD developed silent reflux around 4 months (thankfully literally just before the first covid lockdown hit) so we managed to see a GP. Infant gaviscon worked for her and she grew out of it by around 6 months.

buckingmad · 02/12/2021 07:30

Would love to see links to the what I’m assuming are medical reports into the link between vaccinations and reflux.

mumfred · 02/12/2021 08:31

He has had a very sore, irritated stomach and is very windy and refusing bottles since having all of his vaccinations. NEVER an issue prior. Clearly the vaccine has heightened some underlying silent reflux. Which from reading other forums many other mums, including health visitors are agreeing is linked to the rotavirus vaccine. It’s not just a coincidence since having his vaccines he has suddenly became unwell for an entire week later.

Gosh you come on here for a bit of advice and all the pro vaxxers are on one 🤣

OP posts:
WheelieBinPrincess · 02/12/2021 08:56

Yes but the problem was you were given advice but you ONLY want to hear it’s all linked to the vaccine, and you’ve got the hump that we don’t agree like the ‘other mums’!

BoredatHome321 · 02/12/2021 08:56

Rotavirus vaccine is known to upset the tummy. It can last a little while too. That's probably more likely to be upsetting him. What other symptoms of silent reflux does he have? Hope he's feeling better soon!

mumfred · 02/12/2021 09:05

Of course it’s related to the vaccine, the issues started the following day AFTER he had it 🤣🤣🤣

OP posts:
mumfred · 02/12/2021 09:07

You are right. Unfortunately I was told it would only last a couple of days from the drs, only after speaking to other mums I’m told it can last up to two weeks 😞 he does seem to be arching his back, gagging, coughing etc x

OP posts:
WheelieBinPrincess · 02/12/2021 09:07

Well then tell that to your GP.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 02/12/2021 09:08

My son has his immunisations at 8 weeks old (4 weeks corrected) and he had basically an upset stomach for around 9 days.
He also has reflux but it is a very different kind of upset.
He also had surgery on his stomach and small intestine at 3 weeks old and was at deaths door before that. He didn't want to feed much but we kept up the calpol to help with the pain. Which helped.
Hes had all his rotovirus vaccines now and he reacted the same each time.

mumfred · 02/12/2021 10:18

Oh I’m sorry to hear. How long did he seem to be unwell for after his immunisations? I had a chat with my health visitor again this morning who has said this can last 7-10 days

OP posts:
Mammyofasuperbaby · 02/12/2021 10:42

He had a temp for about a day or 2 and an upset stomach for 9/10 days. Like I said we just kept up the calpol to ease his pain so he would eat something.

Tee20x · 02/12/2021 10:43

Yep the doctors warn you about rotavirus vaccine causing explosive nappies, green poo, upset tummy.

As others have said about 3 months is when other issues such as colic can start so I wouldn't say it's the vaccine that has caused that.

KatieKat88 · 02/12/2021 16:59

Yes the rotavirus vaccine can upset their stomachs. No it can't cause reflux. He might be off his bottles or feeling discomfort due to the vaccine but that isn't reflux. He could additionally be developing reflux/silent reflux but that's just coincidental timing. If it's just discomfort (which is horrible for you and him while it lasts, I completely understand that) it'll ease off. If it's reflux/silent reflux it'll get worse. My DD got to the point where she'd scream 4 minutes into a feed like clockwork and it got worse over a couple of weeks. So you're probably best seeing how you get on over the next few days - fingers crossed it's just discomfort and wears off. Take it easy for both of your sakes. I hope it gets better soon!
