Could you please remind my DH what having a newborn in the house is like?

We have DS1 who is 2yrs 3mths and have recently had DS2 who is now 4 weeks old. I am sick of reminding DH that all newborn babies are pretty much the same in that they cry a lot, sleep a lot during the day, and don't seem to sleep a lot during the night because of the night feeds. Hd seems to think that DS1 never behaved like this - but I can assure him it's SELECTIVE MEMORY!! If you could write what life is like with a newborn, it may help to convince him and I can get on with looking after the baby rather than trying to placate him all the time

Sleep, eat, shit.

If you're unlucky, they cry a lot, too.

And wake up LOTS through the night.

Does that help?

stockingfiller · 16/12/2007 22:54

Utter hell on earth. Scream, scream, feed, scream, feed, scream, feed, scream, scream some more, maybe a bit of sleep, feed, scream.

BroccoliSpears · 16/12/2007 23:10

Mine went feed feed feed feed feed poo sleep feed feed feed feed feed slee... oh no, more feed feed feed poo feed feed sleep feed feed...

CantSleighWontSleigh · 16/12/2007 23:14

Oh yes, forgot all the poo. How could I - she had diarrhoea for 4 months!

ItCameUponAMidnightClara · 17/12/2007 09:37

My DS is 8 weeks old and for the first month if he wasn't feeding he was screaming, pooing, or if we were lucky, sleeping.

Now he's getting a bit more alert and smiling, gurgling etc I think my DP has already forgotten what the early bit was like so expect a similar post from me in a couple of years

meepingaroundthechristmastree · 17/12/2007 09:44

as my friend said to me shortly before dd was born:

"WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAAAAAAAAAAAH"

blueshoes · 17/12/2007 09:54

Smiling, is your dh thinking that ds2 is a more difficult newborn than ds1 (selective memory or otherwise)?

Whether the answer is yes or no, how is that relevant?

CorrieDale · 17/12/2007 09:57

Awwww, newborns are lovely! DD certainly slept more as a newborn than at any time since. I don't think they are all the same, TBH. DS was certainly less easy than DD is (not that he was hard - he was just more high maintenance). And some babies are criers, some not. Some sleepers, some not. But I would agree that when they're new, they have very unpredictable patterns - for pooing, sleeping AND feeding.

dooley1 · 17/12/2007 09:59

mine slept all day and were awake all night
I hated the first 6 weeks.
All they do is eat and sleep all day and then refuse to be put down all night...
The worst bit is having no evenings to yourself when the older one is in bed

They are how they are. No point fighting it.

DD1 went like this:

WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH (feed for about an hour) (sleep for about 30 seconds) WAH "CARRY ME MUMMY!!!!" WAH WAH ...... WAH WAH WAH (gaze adoringly at mummy at 4am when mummy is not in a position to appreciate it) WAH WAH WAH etc, etc, etc

DD2 was more like this:

Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep, (wah) feed, Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep, (wah) feed, Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep, (wah) feed, Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep, (will she ever wake up again?)

And yes, they both took a good few weeks to get the hang of night time. But feeding in a dark room, co-sleeping etc got us through it.

juuule · 17/12/2007 11:39

Very tiring but wonderful.

LadyOfTheHollyAndTheIvy · 17/12/2007 11:39

Wonderful.

juuule · 17/12/2007 11:42

Oh and if he thinks that ds1 didn't behave how ds2 does then remind him that ds2 isn't ds1.

Rollmops · 18/12/2007 16:43

The twins are now 14 days old and have learned to wrestle while being changed, little sods !

How can they produce more solids than are fed in at the screaming end and how did DH teach them to fart so loudly ?????? They certainly didn't pick up any bad habits from mum.

We wouldn't swap them for anything
