Hello,

I'm due to give birth in March and beginning to get items for the nursery. Please can you recommend so much haves and would you recommend buying a rocking/nursing chair for the room?

I already have a comfy single armchair but wondering if a rocking chair would be better?

Many thanks in advance for any tips or advice! x

I spent most of my time feeding my baby in bed. Hardly used my nursing chair. Don't waste money on nursery furniture as you'll have the baby with you for the first 6 months. I would say blackout blinds by Grolight company are worth getting for the summer.

My only advice would be to get only half the stuff you think you need. I have 3 DC, all 3 breastfed, and have never used a rocking chair or a nursing pillow. A comfy armchair/chair/sofa and a normal cushion will do just fine.
The only essentials for the nursery in my opinion are a cot (which I used from birth) and a plastic changing mat.

You will definitely need a fresh cot mattress. But everything else can be bought second hand. Facebook marketplace is your friend!

I always nursed on the bed as well. I find the hand rests on a breastfeeding or rocking chair uncomfortable.

My two favourite purchases:

a nursing pillow

Changing table

We have a comfy chair, rocking not needed. The chair was only added when Ds moved into his room at almost a year old as we use it for reading books in before bed. I always fed at bedtime and overnight in bed

Nice book shelf of some sort handy once at book stage. Small night light that dims also handy.

I fed sitting up in bed - especially since they’ll be in with you at first a chair in the nursery seemed unnecessary as I didn’t want to be going in there in the middle of the night.

Thank you everyone for your advice and recommendations

I had a chair. Tbh you wont know what you want to do until your LO gets here, its all about trial and error and finding out what works for you ime. So my advice would be to not spend a lot now, but wait until you KNOW what you need then buy something decent.

If you have room in the nursery I would go for a single bed instead of chair, your partner can sleep in it at the start if you end up co-sleeping and when they move into their own room you can sit on it to feed, or sleep in when they are unwell.

Get proper furniture to fill the space and don't pay silly money for "nursery furniture"

My LO was born in November and I still haven't furnished his nursery! He sleeps in the bed with me and I breastfeed in bed. I have a next to me cot which I am about to start (trying) to put him in. I doubt he'll be in his own room for another few months. I have a Moses basket for the living room downstairs.

What I'm trying to say is - the early days are about surviving. You might not even set foot in the nursery! Your baby will probably want to be close to you and you'll be too tired to leave th bed or sofa some days. So don't worry about it for now. Enjoy your baby Smile

IKEA drawer inserts - we use for socks, vests, hats, baby grows etc.

We bought a chair but never been used, DC sits on it now but never used when younger.

I bought a changing box for upstairs aswell as down to save bringing up and down everyday.

Night light, noise machine.

Nursery furniture doesn't need to be the most expensive.

Blackout blind.

A waterproof mattress cover for your own bed. I have a ten week old. I've leaked so much milk on the bed, and we've had a few wet nappy leaks too. Lifesaver if you like your mattress!
