Nursery clothes

My lo starts nursery in December. Just wondering where do people get clothes for nursery?

I'd like him to look nice still but in stuff that won't matter if it gets messy/ruined. I keep my eye out for second hand bits in our local charity shops but there's never much in his size.

Obvisously not an issue, just curious what others do.

Sainsbury's and Morrison's mostly. Tend to go simple leggings and tops for nursery. They're inexpensive but wash pretty well.

thismeansnothing · 28/11/2021 11:29

Jeans t-shirts and sweatshirts . Usually supermarket or Matalan.

MangoM · 28/11/2021 11:31

Supermarket clothes are fine for nursery.
Sometimes we put him in slightly nicer outfits but we make sure we've had enough wear out of them at weekends first, so we wouldn't bothered if they came back mucky.

We've had so many clothes come back covered in paint and food and although they supposedly should wash out, they often leave annoying stains.

Supermarket multi packs of tops and leggings. Don’t send the DC in anything that is expensive or won’t stand up to tough treatment and repeated washing.

skkyelark · 28/11/2021 13:40

We use secondhand bundles off ebay/Marketplace/etc., much more choice than an individual charity shop, and much more likely to get enough nursery outfits in one or two bundles.

Caspianberg · 28/11/2021 13:41

H and m is pretty reasonable. Good for multipacks and basics

Arethechildreninbedyet · 28/11/2021 13:43

I seem to be in the minority but 90% of their clothes are ‘nursery clothes’. I buy bundles usually from eBay. I mostly like to buy next, M&S and HM because it looks nice and they wash and wash.

When it’s preloved I give less of a shit. On top of that usually supermarket. I then keep a handful of ‘nice bits’ for if we’re going on days out, out for tea, meeting people.

I'm like this too! My kids live in "nursery" clothes and I have a few nice bits for when there are special occasions/days out etc.

ColdShouldersWarmTummy · 28/11/2021 13:49

Vinted or Tesco/Matalan

Similar to @Arethechildreninbedyet almost all our clothes are nursery/playwear, then we have about 3 smart outfits that hardly ever get worn 😂

Sleepyquest · 28/11/2021 13:51

Bought some bits in the Next sales and primark. Because trust me, they get ruined immediately!

SpangoDweller · 28/11/2021 13:53

Supermarkets and eBay. There are very few clothes that aren’t nursery clothes though - everything is washable and paint/food/mud has always come out after a few washes and being hung out in sunshine. There’s really just a couple of nice knitted jumpers that I don’t want to risk getting wrecked, everything else is fair game.

Spare clothes that stay at nursery are the bits from second-hand bundles that I don’t like, clothes given that I don’t like, and stuff which is on the cusp of being too small.

Namechangedforspooky · 28/11/2021 13:54

I buy navy or heavily patterned clothes from the supermarkets and she also has her sister’s hand me downs
I’m always a bit shocked at all the designer labels when they list the lost property at nursery!

CherryRedDMs · 28/11/2021 14:00

My kids have one or two nice outfits, the rest is for playing. They are as likely to get dirty and muddy with me as at nursery. I don’t want them to ever be inhibited in play by their clothes.
Possibly people have the perception that nursery ruins clothes if they are putting them in cheaper, less well made things those days? I never had anything be actually ruined, everything comes out in the wash.

Us too, we don’t have special clothes for nursery. I find toddler’s clothes are just as likely to get messy at home or at the playground etc as they are at nursery. I also like H&M and M&S. Next is good too.

Primark/cheaper items from tesco/asda/Sainsburys

EL1984 · 28/11/2021 14:02

H&M

AllTheCakes · 28/11/2021 14:05

George at Asda is the best for multi packs. Washes well too. We buy DS the 10 pack of long sleeved tops, currently 10 for £13.50!

mynameiscalypso · 28/11/2021 14:07

We tend towards jogging bottoms, long sleeved t shirt and a hoodie. Mainly from supermarkets. I want DS to be comfortable but it's also useful to have layers - sometimes they have very active days where they make an obstacle course or have a disco and it's good to be able to take a layer off then. Some of the girls in the class come wearing tutus and pretty dresses and I always assume that those outfits are a result of a standoff between parent and child which the child one.

CleanSheetsCupOfTea · 28/11/2021 14:09

DD has just started nursery and I got a multipack of tops and matching multipack of leggings from Asda. All go together so easy to put an outfit on her in the morning, cheap enough so I don’t mind them getting stained.

theorangesisters · 28/11/2021 14:18

Vinted, Ebay and Facebook Marketplace are very good for secondhand/nearly new clothes, shoes and bundles.

pastypirate · 28/11/2021 14:21

Don't send them in white or cream and buy a bar of vanish. Also I hear the pink stuff is also good for stains.

SickAndTiredAgain · 28/11/2021 14:22

Supermarket mainly. But that’s where we get 95% of her clothes anyway, nursery or not.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 28/11/2021 14:24

Asan ex preschool teacher I would say go for comfy, practical and easy on/off. The absolute worst were the super trendy toddler boys in skinny bloody jeans and converse. Nightmare! Joggers and a t shirt would have been so much better. Who cares what they look like at nursery?!

Mol1628 · 28/11/2021 14:24

Primark basics. Or supermarket stuff. And a good in wash stain remover.

Whatamuddleduck · 28/11/2021 14:40

DD and her friend spend most of their time in the mud patch at nursery ‘digging to Australia’, it’s orange clay mud and doesn’t wash out well. I send DD in dark leggings, usually Sainsbury’s or M and S as they wash well, primark jumpers and t shirts. Her ‘nice’ clothes are second hand Boden from eBay as they look good, wash well, seem indestructible and I sell them on when out grown. Mind you DD has a friend who can start the day in white trainers and a white t shirt and go home looking pristine whereas DD somehow comes out of the car in the morning looking likes she’s already walked through a hedge!
