What is dilute?

Mamamamasaurus · 24/11/2021 15:46

@nimbuscloud

What is dilute?
Squash, I'd say
Mamamamasaurus · 24/11/2021 15:48

Do you mean 9.bottles or 9pm?

Have you tried any sippy cups? I found Tommee Tippee to start with but it can be a case of trying them until something sticks

If dilute is squash then I would say take it away completely and give him water. Squash is a truly awful thing

MintMatchmaker · 24/11/2021 15:51

That’s way too much squash in a day. Switch for water and definitely switch to a sippy cup too.

Ohtheaudacity · 24/11/2021 15:51

If your baby is drinking that much squash in a day due to genuine thirst, id be taking him to A&E and insisting on a type 1 diabetes test.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 24/11/2021 15:54

Your child is drinking 81oz of squash a day?? That's approximately almost 2 and 1/2 litres, it's an insane amount of squash for anyone let alone a 1 year old.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/11/2021 15:56

You need to see a doctor about the thirst.

The squash, just cut it out.

KL92xxxx · 24/11/2021 15:56

There’s something called squash syndrome, where kids will drink loads of something because it’s simply a nice taste. Maybe test it by replacing water and if he’s genuinely that thirsty that he drinks 9 x 9oz of water I’d be calling the GP for an emergency app.

My little boy would probably drink a lot of apple juice each day if we let him, maybe not that much, but a lot, but that’s because it’s a nice taste, I know he wouldn’t drink the same amount of water because it’s not genuine thirst.

Starcaller · 24/11/2021 15:58

That's a nuts amount for a child that age. He's drinking it because it tastes nice and is sweet, not because he's thirsty. We are pretty relaxed about v dilute squash but I'd never let DD drink that much in a day. He must be peeing constantly!

Chely · 24/11/2021 15:58

Sounds like he likes the sweetness of the dilute, may be worth trying to limit that to meal times and giving plain water between.
It is time to switch to a cup too, try a few as it may take a while to find one he likes.

Starcaller · 24/11/2021 15:58

Is he drinking it out of a baby bottle too? Like with a teat on?

User5252727 · 24/11/2021 16:00

He shouldn't be having any dilute at all. It's bad for his teeth, it's a cause of diabetes, and he will be getting addicted to the sweetness. It has no nutritional benefit at all.

Wean him off the dilute asap and give him only milk or water. His intake of fluids will balance when he's only drinking because he's thirsty, not because he's addicted to sweetness.

Nocutenamesleft · 24/11/2021 16:02

I agree.

If once you’ve changed it to water and he still drinks a lot. Then I’d take him to the dr

Does he urinate a lot? How’s his health?

TheCheesyBakedBeanGetsGlam · 24/11/2021 16:04

Diabetes screening test as other have said

Get rid of the squash. It tastes nice so they will drink it even when they are not thirsty. One of my DC will guzzle it down until sick or got bad guys (from all the sweetener and too much liquid). They don't hold onto any of the goodness they eat, it just goes through them with that much liquid.

Offer water in a slow flow sippy cup or open beaker and the same with milk. 1 year olds don't need bottles of anything, it can become a comfort thing and if this is the case it would be better to switch to a chew toy or dummy than to have so much liquid going through their system.

Too much fluids can be damaging to the gut bacteria, can flush out nutrients or medicines, and can imbalance salts and electrolytes which can lead to (ironically) dehydration, the child then drinks more thinking they are thirsty when they are actually overloaded with fluid already. At worst this can actually kill them.

Kids are generally very good at self regulating their fluid intake with water so long as they don't drink it too fast (eg. Due to fast flow bottles or drinking through a straw) or there body signals are mixed up (sweeteners and unbalanced electrolytes and salts will do that)

They really don't need that much fluid if still having milk and a balanced diet. A lot of fruit is very hydrating. This does sound extreme quantity wise

TrampolineForMrKite · 24/11/2021 16:07

My eldest was mad for squash, she started drinking a little bit out of a bottle when I weaned her off the breast and it created a mania for it. About 2.5L, I reckon she could have drunk 25L a day if we had let her 😂 I was also worried and worried about possible diabetes. Took her to GP who said it was almost certainly comfort because it was in a bottle and sure enough the sippy cup cured her of it. The “Bottle Fairy” came and took them away. Once she wasn’t sucking it for comfort, she really wasn’t as arsed. It was the sucking not the actual liquid she liked.

TrulyPistoff · 24/11/2021 16:27

Not sure what ’dilute’ is, but please don’t say you are seriously giving your one-year old squash…?

FilledSoda · 24/11/2021 16:39

It's for the taste .
Water or milk in a sippy cup is the way to go.
