Knitted gifts being sold for profit

bobby2step · 23/11/2021 10:30

Last year, my 94yr old gran knitted several items for my friend's baby girl. These items are now being sold by my friend on Facebook, the child has outgrown them.

Should I be annoyed that my friend is profiting from these gifts? In addition, I now have a newborn baby girl. Didn't she think to give them to us?

I don't know whether to be annoyed, furious or just let it slide as it's not worth souring a friendship.

YANBU. I think that's very strange behaviour.

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee

You are over thinking it, they are hers to do with as she pleases. My mum has knitted loads for our DS, not all to our style, we've dressed DS in them as much as possible, but we can't keep it all fir sentimental reason, its too much.

If it really bothers you, ask to buy just those items fom her

Yeh, I'm starting to feel I'm overthinking it.

YY to PP who said you should ask to buy them.

Once a gift has been given, it's upto the repient what they choose to then do with it.

Just because you (or other posters) attach a sentimental value, and would then store the item indefinitely, doesnt mean everyone would.

She may have received hand knitted things from her own Gran which she is more sentimental about, and people cannot possibly store every item they ever receive.

Just message and say "ooh these are the ones Grans Name knitted for you. I'd love to take them off your hands - can you give me a price for them?"

She may just be happy to pass them on to you.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 23/11/2021 13:17

I agree with PP she may not remember who they are from if she got a lot of homemade things.

I would def ask her-offer to buy or replace with ones that would fit now.

I'm very sentimental and would regret not asking!!

This is one of those things that in theory are perfectly okay but in reality feels a bit ‘off’. I think that maybe yabu because your friend isn’t going to feel sentimental about them in the same way you do because it was your gran who made them rather than hers. If you are having another baby it would have been nice for her to offer them to you but some people don’t think like that and are a bit more focused on the money they will get.

bobflob · 23/11/2021 13:26

@FreeBritnee

I think I too would be miffed. Particularly as they could have been kept for her next child or passed to you. As they were gifts you’re just going to have to simmer quietly on it.
Yeah, I don't think there's anything to gain from being overtly miffed about the selling of the knits.

They'll be going to good use,

YABU

Clues in the word gift, which means

“ a thing given willingly to someone without payment; a present.”

So they are now hers to do as she wishes and nothing to do with you

So butt out

Chloe, I appreciate your frank assessment of my situation.
MintJulia · 23/11/2021 13:34

I'm not sure it's any of your business. The items belong to her.

People have limited storage space. It is completely normal to declutter and sell anything that children have outgrown. Plus young parents
can normally do with the extra money.

Did you name change, OP? Your replies aren’t coming up highlighted as being the OP.

Marvellousmadness · 23/11/2021 14:04

Yabu. Your gran gave it to her. So she is free to do as she please. Stop acting entitled.

Sorry, but you are completely in the wrong here.

When you give something to somebody it becomes theirs to do with as they see fit. She probably got loads of presents for her baby and I doubt whether she even remembers who gave what.
