If you don't use a sleeping bag, what do you use?

DS is 6 months, has slept in a sleeping bag at night for a while fine but the last 2 night's every time he rolls over he coughs. It seems like it's the wriggling in the slee ping bag doing it.

Just taken it off and using a blanket instead for tonight.. but what else do you use for a wiggly 6 month old? I've seen bags with legs separate but not sure if that would help 🤷‍♀️

Or have you had this and the bigger size helped? He's in a 0-6 bag so I'm wondering if it's a bit small.

Why would wriggling in his sleeping bag make him cough?

Elbie79 · 22/11/2021 03:49

Agree it doesn't follow that coughing = sleeping bag. I personally wouldn't use a blanket on a baby. Some bigger bags sound needed.

Not sure why rolling over in a sleeping bag would make him cough. Confused
But my DC had flat sheets and blankets. Tucked in around the mattress and put to bed "feet to foot" so they couldn't get them over their heads.

Maybe he just has a cough, or do you mean the bag is getting tight round his neck?
I'd say definitely size up, it gives them more room for their wee legs.

MumOfBoys16 · 22/11/2021 06:42

Yes, it seemed like when he rolled he then got up on his knees and rocks then lies again, and then coughed.. so we were thinking it was getting pulled too tight on his neck. But then he still did it with the blankets on! So yes looks like he's got a cough.

I'll try a bigger bag anyway I think, but would be interested in alternatives. The bags with legs.. what would be the advantage of that? Other than to walk when they're older obviously!

I'm two kids in and have never noticed a link between sleeping bags, wriggling and coughs.

Both of mine have roamed around the cot in their sleep so blankets are useless for them. I use a blanket for DS' naps and he's never under it when i go in to fetch him.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 22/11/2021 06:46

Definitely no correlation between him coughing and the sleeping bag. The alternative is a blanket and moving to a duvet when he is older but honestly most people use a sleeping bag because they are so much more convenient.

Also don't worry about one's with feet when they can walk its pretty pointless as if they want to walk they will find a way even in a normal sleeping bag. Grin

The bags with legs are great when they can walk (obviously) but I also found as they were a tighter fit on their bodies, they were easier for dc to roll around and get in a comfortable position

Blankets are a pain at that age. Just try the next size of sleeping bag.

M&S sell sleeping bags that are 6-18 months so are quite long and feel amazingly soft! Just saying because I recently bought one and wish I’d found them sooner :)

DD never took to sleeping bags so we used cellular blankets from an early age. I would absolutely hate to sleep in a restrictive sleeping bag with no way to take it off, so I can understand why she wouldn’t want to either!

A2304 · 23/11/2021 08:07

I've just started using sleeping bags for ds as it's getting colder , mamas and papas sell 6-18 months bags and they are v neck so they wouldn't be anywhere near your baby's neck
