Hi! Have anyone's LOs had HFM? My 11 month old has it 😢. It started with a very high temp 2 days ago and then his temp crept up. He developed a rash yesterday and this morning came out in more spots. By this evening they had turned to blisters and it was confined as HFM. He has sores in his ears and at the back of his throat too, as well as the classic hands, feet and privates. Does anyone know how long it will take to clear? I feel so bad for him - he seems in so much pain. Thanks

Hey @santas27 hope you ok Thanks ds had it at 9m and I think it took around 2weeks to fully go away.

WhoUsedMyName · 21/11/2021 20:15

Sorry should have added he had tonsillitis at the same time and was generally run down from an ear infection prior to that so I think he just had a really unlucky month!
Spots lasted longest around his mouth but we kept on top of Calpol and nurofen and lots of cuddles

Hi! My 19mo had this and I say he felt the symptoms and was poorly for about 4 or so days, it took weeks for the spots to go away though.

DS had this recently, the 2/3 days before the rash came out was the worst. High temp & poorly. Once the spots were out he was feeling better within 2/3 days.

Took about a week for the rash to clear but was fine in himself and spots healed / crusted

My 18 month old son had this recently. Took a couple of weeks to completely clear. Not much you can unfortunately apart from Calpol/Nurofen for the temperature and any pain.

snackess · 21/11/2021 20:24

Oh yeah, gave calpol for the 5 worst days. Plus an ad-hoc dose here & there if miserable after.

I think he was sore and kept saying his neck & head hurt so presume sore throat / headache.

stupiduser · 21/11/2021 21:10

My 11 year old had it a few weeks ago. Her sits were all gone and she was back to school in 10 days

allofthecheese · 21/11/2021 21:12

Yeah it's awful. It took about a week to clear up for my DC. Lots of cuddles, water and calpol.

Hi OP, I agree with PP that the days before the rash appeared were the worst for us. We had it (4yo and 10 month old) about 2 weeks ago but both relatively mildly. 3 days after blisters appeared the 4yo was back at school at they were nagging me quoting NHS advice to get him back 'as soon as well enough' and ignore the spots... Hope your LO is better soon

Damnyoureyes · 21/11/2021 21:19

About 2 weeks.
Calpol, fluids & cuddles.
Exactly 6 weeks after mine recovered, every single finger nail and toe nail fell off.
Honestly, bizarre! I googled it and yes it’s a well known thing with HF&M!!

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 21/11/2021 21:24

Wow reading some of these replies it seems my DS got off lightly!

Ohthereyouarepeter · 21/11/2021 21:30

My DS2 had his 1 yr vaccinations on Friday so I assumed his temperature was from that however he now has blisters in all the classic hfm areas. With DS1 the worst of it was before the blisters appeared so I’m hoping he will be more settled from tomorrow onwards. Hope it’s the same for you, but right now you have my sympathies as we are in the trenches together!

santas27 · 22/11/2021 06:47

Ahh thanks everyone. He seems to be a bit better this morning and managed some milk, the blisters look awful though. I guess we just have to wait this one out! So worrying when they're not well x

We're just coming out the other end of a HF&M episode with my 11 month old. She had a small blister on her hand on wends, had a temperature at 1am that night and was given calpol. She woke up with a blister on her chin on Thursday and was utterly miserable all day. HF&M was confirmed on Friday, no temp but blisters all over her hand, face and a rash over her body. Blisters were worse on Saturday but she started to feel a little more like herself and was mostly back to normal on Sunday. Then fine and playing like normal but still with blisters on Monday. That was a week ago and the blisters have almost completly gone thankfully.

However, we caught it and it was terrible!! On the Sunday we both had chills, aches and fever. I had the same on monday and small blisters started appearing on my chin. The next day my throat was raw with blisters, my hands and feet were covered too. They appeared in delicate places too. I couldn't swallow or move my hands or feet, it was unbearable. The Dr. gave me stronger painkillers than when I had a section! I spent two days in bed eating ice and not moving. Then they just suddenly got less painful and now a few days later all my skin is falling off, but I feel fine. Do whatever you can not to catch it!
