Where and how do you nappy change your baby / toddler?

I'm trying to deal with my LO who refuses to keep still for nappy changes. I've tried everything, on the floor, on the bed, on the changing unit various distraction techniques etc but it's still like changing an octopus!

How old are they?

GoodnightGrandma · 21/11/2021 18:12

I used to put the changing mat on the floor so they couldn’t fall anywhere.
And I got them into pull-ups ASAP as I find them easier to get on.

On the floor and pinned him down with my thigh. Eventually he learnt to stay still for nappy changes, we never needed to use pull ups.

I still change Ds 18 months every time on changing Mat ontop of drawers as table. He’s doesn’t wriggle half as much up high.

Recently stayed in a hotel and he was a nightmare changing on the floor or bed as it’s like he knows it’s safe to just scarper.

Most nurseries always change up high on unit until potty trained.

Ended up on the window sill, standing, from about a year so he could look out and we could chat about what he could see. Was so glad to potty train at 18mo!

Thanks all, he's 3yo and still not interested in the potty but isn't keen on nappy changes either.

The distraction techniques do still work sometimes but other times it's just a battle from start to finish.

I am a terrible mother and put a YouTube video on my phone and give her that.

(in my defence this is only for poos, not wees, and we usually do Number Zoo so at least she's learning something)

Whatever works for you works for you, but it made me laugh to imagine this from your neighbour's perspective! I remember fireworks starting to go off when I was getting DS out of the bath once so I lifted him straight into the bedroom windowsill to look - then realised that he was essentially flashing the whole street!

If he's 3 I'd be biting the bullet soon and toilet training, maybe over the holidays if you're not travelling anywhere. Whilst I'd never rush any kid into it, if he goes to nursery they will soon expect it and life is so much easier without nappies to deal with!

T0rt0ise · 21/11/2021 22:07

@Hardbackwriter the thought has crossed my mind many times but thankfully his bedroom is at the back of the house and his window only overlooks our garden Grin

Have you tried him with a step and the toilet ? Maybe he doesn’t like the nappy’s? I would stay at home as much as you can for a week or two and just leave him nappy free and try and toilet train. Roll the rugs up or use puppy pads on carpet , pop towels on the sofa and just go for it, that’s how I did it with my 2yo.
