My 14mo is getting too big for his tots bots size 2s. What should I try next?

Can anyone offer any advice?

I'm having real trouble with getting nappies to fit my ds. He is very tall and the totsbots size twos just don't come far enough up the back and front, if you know what I mean!

I used prefolds initially with my dd but then moved on to these totsbots (on their second use now). The rainbowbots seem OK at the moment, but the originalbots seem tiny!

I have quite a collection of nappies as I had two in them for a while, but I still haven't found the perfect nappy for him. I use a combination of the totsbots, fuzzibunz petites (OK rise wise but tend to leak around the legs) Kushies toddler AIO (tend to leak at waistband) Diddy Diaper sz2 (prefer these to totsbots)and a Bumgenius stuffable (probably my favourite)

So what have I missed? Anyone been in the same position?

Why not try size 3 tots?

Pannacotta · 14/12/2007 22:22

size 3 Tots or you could try the new Thirsties here
www.kittykins.co.uk/cloth-nappies/type/5/brand/thirsties/style/%27fab+fitted+nappies%27

mangojuice · 14/12/2007 22:22

I considered them but wondered if there was anything better out there better I spent more! They don't seem to be a great cut for him, and hes nowhere near 35lbs yet

did you look at the thirsites?

mangojuice · 14/12/2007 22:25

Ooh those thirsties look nice. It's been a couple of years since I bought my nappies and its amazing how many brands there are now. Have you used them Pannacotta? Would you recommend them?

Have just ordered some - I like to try new nappies - but they got a glowing report from Anj at Kittykins and her advice is usually spot on. She said they were v absorbtant but slimmer fitting than the Rainbow Tots (which I used for DS1). And the colours are gorgeous too!
Am going to reclaim some of the cost from my lcoal council - part of their cloth nappy incentive, can you do the same, to reduce the cost for you?

LadyOfTheHollyAndTheIvy · 14/12/2007 22:30

The reason I don't 'do' Tots is because I find the straps/tabs to deep so for DS2 with chubby (gorgeous) thighs, they cut in a bit and being thick/deep the tabs tend to force the nappy low like a hipster nappy.

For this reason, my Tots have been replaced by Little Lambs as the tabs are narrow and very long in comparison so I can get a good fit and hitch them up and they stay there.

DS1&2 are both in cloth, DS1 is tall and skinny and DS2 is short and stocky and Lambs fit both of them as they are more adjustable.

I have loads of nappies from pockets to old terry squares, but I find Tiddlybums very good. They have poppers (loads) and are very genourously sized and fleece lined so no need to put a liner in for DS1s sensitive bum.

mangojuice · 14/12/2007 22:33

Yes, our scheme gives £30 which I've had twice now. They give it as a cheque too, which is good as you're free to buy as you wish. I'm quite tempted by those Thirsties I have to say. I might contact them and see if they can give me some measurements

OP posts:
mangojuice · 14/12/2007 22:38

I'd forgotten about Little Lambs. I had a size 1 when he was newborn and it was great. They're the ones with the fleece liners arent they? Mmmm, might be worth considering.

Sounds like your DS is tall but not chunky like my DD2. I've had exactly the same problems you have had with the nappies you mention (although I think quite a lot of people find TB too low in the rise before it is time to reach for the potty (Little LAmbs are the same).

I use Ellas House Day nappies - they have a high rise but might not suit you as thy are hemp, I prefer the popper fit on these. They are very slim fitting though - best buy second hand for decent absorbancy IME.

You could also try baby beehinds which I believe have a similar rise (not tried them myself - yet) but they have a bamboo version which you might prefer to hemp.

Pocket Bots pocket nappies suited my DD well too (check out the good features that make them work so well www.pocket-tots.com/details.htm If you ask, she will adjust to your DS's measurement but you may find you don't need her too - she does 'medium long' which I bet would fit well(cheaper than BG but not BTP).

Without doubt the best wrap for my DD has been the ME airflow - it gives a good rise while being very adjustable around the legs and waist. So if you go for shaped 2 part nappies try these!

easy peasy bumbles should also give a good fit - esp if you use the nippa version.

Little Lambs aren't fleece lined btw, but they do come with a sort of soft fluffy insert

mangojuice · 14/12/2007 22:55

Thats what I remembered, it was so soft and fluffy I kept it and use it as a liner still. We live in a hard water area so I like my fluffy liners!

Yes, he's 98th centile for height but only average weight. I'd heard of Ellas house but never tried them, the other brands are new to me, you can tell I've not bought any for a while!

I had a ME airflow wrap but didn't get on with it for some reason. I know a lot of people swear by them but I found it hard to get the right fit. I've got a large selection of Cotton Bottoms wraps I got with my now unused prefolds which fit well over the shaped nappies. The only wrap I dont like is the Totsbots fleece one.

How old is your dd2 coby?

OP posts:
LadyOfTheHollyAndTheIvy · 14/12/2007 23:09

For what it's worth, DS1 who is 2 is 98th for height and average weight, making him very skinny for his age, by the sounds of it the same as your DS and I find Little Lambs size 2 perfect...?
I like the fleecy inserts too, liners they are, and poo drops of them very easily as they so long piled.
The rise is fine on size 2's too...?
Bumhuggers fit well too but I have just sold mine as they would go like cardboard in our hard water area and I don't like to tumble if I can help it.

coby · 15/12/2007 20:55

My DD2 (19 months) is 98th Centile and just a bit under average weight but the Little Lambs are too low in the rise and she gets builders bum - can only think Ladyofthehollyandtheivy and I have bought ours at different times. Mine were bought about 4 months ago - I have some Size 1's I bought about 15 months ago and they seem a generally better fit and have a relatively higher rise . My best buddy has some of the rather rare Size 3 Little Lanbs as her DD is out of her size 2's in the rise too.

I would avoid anything hemp if you live in hard water area tbh so maybe the Ellas House aren't going to be a good choice for you. We are in a soft water area but without a final tumble they can get a bit stiff sometimes.

I much preferred the rikki wrap over the airflow until DD2 was about 16 months then she changed shape and the airflow was better - thank goodness she did that during the sales .

There are some cheap Little Lambs on ebay right now and they now do a microfibre one which is fab, very quick drying, good in hard water and best of all it is not as bulky as tots bots fluffles - maybe worth a try.

btw - I found my rainbow bots didn't shrink half as much as the originals seemed to, plus, I think they have more stretch to them so maybe that is why yours still fit at the mo.

Tall and skinny DS1 went into Tots size 3 way before he reached the stated weight range and is still wearing them now at 2.5. The velcro ones seem quite a bit smaller than the nippa ones that I have, so he started wearing those ones first.

In between the tots bots sizes 2 and 3 I put him into size 2 diddy diapers which fitted him much better (he still occasionally wears them when we get behind with the washing). The only downside is that they don't really stand up to his extreme heavy wetting (he drinks A LOT!).

These days I'm loving the Motherease Sandy's Todderease nappies (must buy some more ) but admittedly found these were far too ENORMOUS on DS until recently - I've never tried them in size 2 so don't know if they would be a good fit etc

WashSantasRedSuitErsaurus · 15/12/2007 21:43

Oh, and although they are definitely not my favourites; I do also use Motherease Onesize nappies too, as I too have 2 in cloth at the moment and they are easy to keep in my change bag (and nursery seem to prefer them too)

bagpuss · 15/12/2007 22:03

I agree with Washersaurus. DS2 grew out of his size 2s at 2.1 and I went for the size 3s but could have got away with buying them sooner really. We were stuck for absorbancy with the size 2 tots but the size 3s were brilliant, especially with a rikki wrap (again bought in XL even though he was 29 lbs). I also carried on using my MEOS and bought some Toddlerease. DS2 then promptly potty trained 6 weeks later . For nights now, we are still using minki pockets, which although bulky, seem to be the most waterproof and best fitting we have tried. He has been wearing the same large minki pockets since he was about 9 months old so they have been good value.

mangojuice · 15/12/2007 22:26

Thanks for all the advice ladies, it's good to hear what has worked (and what hasn't!) for those of us with long and lean children.

It's so difficult to know what will work for your own child until you've tried them isnt it? Sadly I'm the only cloth nappy user I know in RL so I'm going to buy a selection I think, a totsbots sz 3, a little lambs sz 2 (thanks for the ebay tip coby)a thirsties (love coloured nappies for some reason) and also a pocketbots mediumlong as they are so cute!

I'll give them all a try and see which suits us best before stocking up. The original bots can go into the loft I think.

WSRSersaurus, how are you finding having two in cloth? I did it for ten months til dd pottytrained, and actually found it really easy, I alway had a full load to wash!

OP posts:
WashSantasRedSuitErsaurus · 15/12/2007 22:37

Two in cloth is no problem at all - I have 3 buckets that fit in my large capacity washing machine every 2/3 days. We upgraded to a bigger machine while I was pregnant with DS2 so we don't do any more nappy washes than I did when we only had 1 in cloth!

The change bag that I take out and about with me now is HUGE though (with all the washable loveliness of my nappies and wipes)

mangojuice · 15/12/2007 22:44

We did exactly the same- 3 buckets and a bigger machine! I know what you mean about the enormous change bag though. I thought I could streamline it a bit when dd pottytrained, but now I have to cart around a fold out travel potty and a change of clothes just in case, so it's no easier really!

Can I pick your brains about washable wipes whilst we're here? I can't remember what brand mine are and I need to get some more really. What sort do you use? The ones I have are towelling on one side and cream fleece on the other.

OP posts:
WashSantasRedSuitErsaurus · 15/12/2007 22:51

Ooo I don't like the fleecey wipes at all as they just smear and don't absorb anything. I use the cotton ones - I have some cotton bottoms ones and some cheapy ones like these. I also use those cheap Ikea flannels.

mangojuice · 15/12/2007 22:56

I love my fleecy ones, especially for when we're out and about with a squirt of baby lotion. Ikea flannels are a good idea, I'll have to pick some up next time we're there, or have a weed out of the face-wipe-after food pile

OP posts:
coby · 15/12/2007 23:02

Totally agree with xmassy washersaurus! Don't get on with fleece reusable wipes at all, they just smear and don't 'collect'!

The cheapest option if you have an old cot sheet is to just cut that up - that's what I use and I find it has a good mix of qualities that I won't go into in case anyone is eating and reading this .

Flannels are great too if you can find a load cheap somewhere - that said, I reckon you could buy 50 luxury face cloths from harrods, use them and still save money by not having to buy the usual disposable baby wipes every week or so.
