Sleep consultant recommendations

Please no negativity, I’m a sleep deprived mum - any nasty comments are really not needed. Would appreciate your thoughts and experiences if you’ve had a sleep consultant. I live in Scotland and looking for a virtual experience

I bought an online course from the parent and baby coach. I found it really good

Zero negativity hit just wanted to tell you a little bit about the sleep co sultanas I used.
I specifically wanted a gentle approach, and as most of us know the Ferber method and the 'simplicity' of that I believe that most wanting to use a sleep coach want a more gentle experience to minimise distress and tears from all involved!
I wrote detailed consultation notes prior to working with TWO highly recommended sleep coaches.
Ultimately their angle was to persuade me that it's 'ok for them to cry as long as you pop in and reassure them'
I personally felt frustrated and felt it was a little bit of a scar as I'd specifically stated I didn't want to do those types of methods (not negating how effective they can be)
Talking to other friends they had similar experiences.
It seems that the 'magic' of a slee trainer is them soothing you and persuading you that a quick regime that involves crying will be the fastest fix. And honestly if that was the only answer they can provide then I'd have saved the chunk of money spent and done Ferber alone!
They really don't tend to know any more than what you've (assume) already read online. What they provide is the motivation to put a method in place, usually the fastest method that works which will be some form of 'leave them to cry for 5 minutes and pop in for 30 seconds patting only then leave'
I naively thought they'd have some magic no cry solution....

We tried lots for virtual advice but only really saw progress when we used one who came to the house overnight and actually physically helped/was an encouraging presence during sleep training. Not cheap but worth it as I really needed the moral support! We rang around lots who only did standard Ferber etc, but then found one who would help with a gradual retreat (bottom patting and shhing, then just shhhing, then leaving the room etc) which I was much more comfortable with. Unfortunately this was in London so I can't recommend this specific person to you.

www.happylittledreamers.co.uk Gentle gradual retreat approach was suggested for our child which worked brilliantly. Lots of support via encouraging phone calls.

Thank you all for your really helpful responses - so appreciate it!!

@1940s that’s really helpful thank you. I have been trying the Ferber method already but feel like I keep falling down when something throws me off in terms of his routine... I feel like I need someone to troubleshoot for me but maybe that’s just lazy.

Thanks again everyone xxx

I used Ann Caird for my older child. I couldn't bear any training methods and she helped us sort sleep very very gently. Totally recommend

Nicola at Child Sleep Solutions saved my sanity with my second!

I don’t have any sleep consultant recommendations but just came on to mention Ferber. I see you’re using the method, but just wanted to say that it really is worth reading the book if you haven’t already.
The “method” bit that is well known is only one of the aspects - I found the book really good.
I got the e-book, was really useful to read the intro and then just relevant chapters.

We used a no cry method. They say 97% of cases will work within 4-6 weeks. I thought I bet it doesn’t work for us.

It did!

DC woke every 10 mins. Most sleep would be an hour. 10-12 wakings in a night. No day sleeps more than few mins. Unless on me.

Transformed our life.

redorange89 · 11/12/2021 06:05

Hi all

We ended up going with Andrea Grace and she has been amazing so far - son has gone from at least 4 wakenings for a feed at night, but on a bad night up to 8... to zero wakenings for a feed and no dummy. He self settled to sleep last night with some gentle shushing within 5 mins. He’s just had his first night of sleeping through, with one wake up that needed a gentle shush from me which took less than a minute to go back to sleep and then 2 wake ups that I was aware of where he went back to sleep himself in under 2 mins.

Amazing. Honestly, my mental health has been saved. Best money I’ve ever spent.
