Relentless Illness - Holistic remedies, tips, advice?

My 3 year old DD attends nursery 4 mornings a week and literally does a loop where catching illnesses are concerned! There never seems to be any respite for her? And my husband and I are shattered with the night wakings and her ending up in our bed. I also end up getting everything passed onto me!

During the past 6 weeks we’ve endured the usual coughs/colds, an ear infection (on which she ended up on Amoxicillin - I detest antibiotics!) hand/foot/mouth/disease, two UTIs and she’s back on Salbutamol inhaler for her viral wheeze!

Has anyone got any holistic tips, remedies etc to help my DD recover and build up her immune system? I’d just like her to be well for more than a measly day or two!

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, this is just how it is. I’m assuming she’s just started somewhat recently? Both mine started before 1 and we mostly got through this phase after the second winter.

There is nothing you can do for her really. But I’d strongly suggest vitamin c and zinc for you, so you don’t get sick too. And just going to bed early and prioritising naps for each of you on the weekends.

Ahh, it's the same with my one too OP. It's relentless isn't it? Everyone in my LO's nursery including mine have all be down with one thing or another since they started in September. My gp told me that it's normal for children especially those who go to nursery/school or play groups to become ill constantly and to expect something every couple of week or so. So basically as soon as they've recovered from one illness they go get something else. Just make sure you give them vitamin d to boost their immunity. I know some parents give their children multivitamins as well.

Thanks for all your advice! I just didn’t realise to what extent she’d be ill, but I’m hearing this is a common occurrence for toddlers. It’s just so draining 😵‍💫

I currently give her a multi vitamin and the Vit D spray, personally I don’t think these are doing much? I’m currently on Vit C, D spray, and garlic capsules. DD passed on H/F/M/D to me and I still think I’m recovering from that! I had it 10x worse than she did 😞

Think I’ll have to do some more intensive research - it doesn’t help that she’s a fussy eater either; healthy and new foods are often a big no-no for her.

I really feel for you. We are in exactly the same boat so would be interested in seeing what responses you get. We have a multivitamin too but still DD is poorly with something or other every other week since starting nursery in Sept. Shes 11 months.
Firstly it was norovirus vomit and diarrhoea bug which floored our whole household for a week at the end of Sept. Then an ear infection closely followed by RSV bronchiolitis throughout October. Then first week in November it was hand foot and mouth! I kept her off nursery for a week and she returned this week, and I thought after that we might get a break finally!! Boy was I wrong.. last night she was up ALL night and has come out in all the spots AGAIN on her face and bum. She has HFMD again. Twice in the space of a fortnight... Sad
It is absolutely relentless isn't it OP. I really hope things settle down soon and you catch a break. Xx

I think the constant illnesses are normal. Since I've been strict with giving my little girl multivitamins I've noticed that while she doesn't get fewer cold, they are milder and quicker to shift.

Night times IMO are a separate issue. I was up through the night a lot too until I decided I wasn't going to be getting her out of bed anymore. After a few nights of just reassuring her in her own bed and then leaving she hasn't awoke at night and needed settling for a few months now. It is hard and you do feel mean but if they end up sleeping through it's better for everyone.

Constant illness is normal when they start unfortunately. I've found Sambucol helpful, seemed to get sick less and then they seemed to have shorter illnesses when they did get sick.

You’ve just got to ride that storm unfortunately.

Supplements will not shield from illness.

It’s horribly normal and her immune system is being built just by her exposure to these minor illnesses.
Immunity will be quite robust by the time she starts school.
It’s a very rough ride for the first 4/5 years but be assured that minor illness are mostly self contained as in will get better on their own without treatment but builds the immune system well.

Loads of garlic in food, zink, pickled food ( great for gut flora) a lot of fresh air. My dcs weren't/ aren't ill much even though they got/get exposed to a lot of bugs etc.
It's a luck too but I am convinced the fact that they were ebf until 15 months each, outside a lot and are very physical so constantly running around( has its downsides though as it's exhausting)

Abitlost2 · 20/11/2021 08:03

I would ask the nursery how often they go out and for how long, dcs get ill from being inside too much especially with lots of other kids, it's a breeding ground for bugs.
I have 3 dcs and I notice if we are inside a lot they become lethargic and run down. We also live by the sea and eat loads of fish so omega 3 is great too.

Abitlost2 · 20/11/2021 08:05

Lots of exercise is really benificial as it's a great immune booster so cycling, scooting, swimming etc.

juliainthedeepwater · 20/11/2021 08:10

I've just started both of mine on daily Sambucol. Could be a complete nonsense, but enough (non-nutty) people recommended it to me that I thought I'd give it a try!

But yes, sadly the brutal truth is that the best path to strong immunity is walking through the horrible bugs!
