Am I being unreasonable?

My mum starts having my son throughout the week when I am back at work in the new year and is adamant that she wants to have a chair for him that attaches to the table instead of a standing high chair. I know these have been used for years but I do not feel comfortable with that and neither does husband, I would t use one so I don't want her to with him.

I have even said I will buy an IKEA high chair for her but she is not accepting it, she still wants one that clips onto the table for him.

She also has a huge kitchen with lots of floor space so I dont see the issue of I buy one for her. It is almost causing a falling out because I don't want him to ha e one that attached to the table.

Should say that I wouldn't use one myself

Why not?

Could you compromise with one that sits on the chair? Doesn’t take up floorspace like a regular chair but sturdier than a hanging one.

Honestly I’d be annoyed at having to have a bloody great high chair in my kitchen too, but if she’s volunteered to be daycare then she will need to have some of your DCs stuff around. However, particularly if she’s doing it for free, she should also be able to choose how that works for her in her home.

Pay to put him in nursery then.

RaisedByPangolins · 17/11/2021 14:15

Something like this. Then she can pop it away in a cupboard when he’s not there.

This will be the first of many compromises you’re going to have to make if someone else is looking after your DC so pick your battles.

Get different child care then, don't fall out over personal choice. If you don't feel your mother will use the equipment you want her to then get child care who will.

This is strange - has she told you why she’s so attached to that kind of chair? Sounds like lots of discussion is needed before making any ultimatums. I’m not sure I’d be comfy with it either, but equally I know I’ve had to compromise on some things given I am getting free childcare from my mum. There have been some safety issues though that we’ve had to have strong words about and now my youngest is in nursery more I am relieved. If it’s going to be fraught then you may want to review your options, but relationships with GP are important if possible.

I would be totally happy with one that attaches to a chair! Good idea and thank you to those who have suggested this!

To those who are wondering why not, I just do not Seel that it would be safe or sturdy enough, especially as he grows bigger, I also don't like the idea of him being in close reach to hot food or drinks that may be on the table in front of him, would rather he had his one table tray and wasn't suspended mid air thanks haha!

The Chicco Pocket Snack is a booster seat and folds up quite small so it could be put away easily when he's not there.

In fact, she used one that sits on top of a chair for my eldest son when he was younger so I've no idea why she hasn't decided on this again, unless there is a reason that she didn't like it... definitely something I will suggest to her! Oh and she would go crazy at me if I said we were going with different childcare instead of her.

Also, I would never forgive myself if she did get the chair that hooks onto the table and it fell off or if my other son lent on it and pulled it down accidentally. Just not a possibility I want!

:)

Thank you for the helpful comments and thank you to the other not so helpful comments that have given me such a good chuckle hahah!

Of she wants a high chair that goes up to the table could look at Tripp trap high chairs can be used at the table and can use for years but not attached!!
