Toddlers, vegetables and constipation

Hello all,

I posted a week or so ago about DS 23 months and withholding poo, which he has fortunately stopped doing for now (some random potty anxiety which seems to have passed). He’s been pooing in his potty since about 14 months (his choice, he hates a dirty nappy).

He is, however, struggling with hard poos and finding it uncomfortable to go. I’m stuck as he won’t eat vegetables except on a rare occasion, though he does tend to have fruit most days. Is there anything anyone can suggest for me to do about his diet to help him move his poo along more easily? He used to eat all his vegetables! I’ve tried multi-veg mash (about 50% success), blended veg pasta sauce (he wipes the sauce off!) and offering stewed meat/fish with veg (he refuses the entire meal).

He won’t drink fruit juice but I’ve found that if I put it in a syringe and call it medicine he will gulp it down! I don’t like using it too much, though, as of course it isn’t recommended.

Also beans are good. Will he eat casserole type things? Ds is a similar age and loves sweet potato casserole with butter beans or black beans. And peas at any time. Most other veg are hit and miss

More fibre;

porridge

lentils cooked to mush

apple sauce

fresh pineapple

Fingers of buttered wholemeal toast

Rice pudding

One of my DC had a serious issue with constipation (was in hospital). Afterwards the Consultant said it’s mainly due to lack of fluids so increasing water / squash / juice whatever should help. Some of the medications that work to ease constipation work by increasing fluid in the bowel which softens the poop and then it’s easier to push out, so drinking lots is similar.

Will they have the Ella kitchen prune pouch?

Puréed pears worked a treat with mine too.

Fantastic, thank you. He has porridge but has lately started refusing banana with it! I will see whether we can coax more fruit into his diet and definitely more water, thank you.

Gosh, I wish he would! I love cooking casseroles but he rejects them without trying. He used to love a good cottage pie with loads of veg!
