Hiya, am a first time mum with a 6 week old and after breastfeeding didn't work out for us we started on formula. I was bought a perfect prep machine and after talking to the HV today she told me they don't recommend them. Am now in a mess over what to do, am suffering from PNA and this has sent me over the edge. The machine has helped me so much am not sure I can manage without it. Am I putting my son at risk by using it? Any advice would be fantastic Smile

@Jayjayes

Thanks all, I've actually had bits come out the machine on the cleaning cycle so now am torn over what Is best plus I added boiling water and the machine is saying temperature too hot so I might have broken itConfused not doing a great job here.
These both happened to me frequently. The bits coming out of the cleaning means that the cleaning is doing what it's supposed to. I think the 'too hot' light comes on and the machine won't work because it might mean that you end up with a bottle that's too hot for the baby too safely drink (because the waters not cold enough to cool it down). Mine also used to get like that when the kitchen was too warm in summer. I would just run some cold water through it and it was fine. I know that PNA is the worst though but you're really not doing anything bad at all.

Have used one since about 8 weeks after my milk supply massively dwindled. We spent a hectic fortnight trying to make bottles with boiled water and to save my sanity my MIL bought me a prep machine. Lifesaver! My HV looked at it and said “Oh good, you have your prep machine and steriliser”
As long as you use the correct, branded filters and clean as required to the instructions, I don’t see any issue. Havent had a problem with it and my little one is 5 months now.

Ah op totally hear you. I “failed” at bf dd1 and with dd2 managed to combi feed with the essential help from our perfect prep machine (our MW was absolutely fine with it). I found checking out YouTube vids on it helpful. Being a parent is a mine field anyway, we’ll always be judged or worse judge ourselves but if you let common sense prevail you’ll be fine. My dd survived very well with our perfect prep and it probably saved my mh which in turn saved the rest of our family.

OP - honestly the Tommee Tippee machine is fine. The NHS method of making a bottle is to boil a kettle, wait 30 mins, mix it up and then cool it to a safe temp. They advise you should do this on demand - i.e. don't make bottles in advance and store in fridge and then reheat. I don't know anyone who follows the NHS advice as it's impossible to feed a baby that way without leaving them to scream for ages while you go through the whole process. So you are left either making up bottles in advance, storing in fridge and reheating or using the perfect prep. For storing milk in fridge, you'd need to always be sure your fridge was at correct temp etc. I have never read a story of any harm coming to a baby from a perfect prep. They have been on the go for years. Everyone I know uses them. The black carbon stuff is normal. I used to spend ages cleaning mine with my first DD and complained to other mums about the process. Loads of them said to me "I didn't know you had to do a cleaning cycle!" Their babies were also fine. I'm not saying don't clean it. I am saying - don't overthink it. The machine is absolutely safe. With my first DD, the cleaning instructions were to use Milton and then boiling water - took forever and twice my machine broke on the cleaning cylce - I think just because the motor is not powerful enough to run all that water through it in one go! I just bought a new machine for second DD and the instructions are different - just using boiling water. I assume because so many machines used to break with the old 2 stage Milton and then boiling water cleaning cycle wearing out the motor. I will just be using boiling water as per the new instructions. I really recommend you relax and enjoy the convenience of the machine :-)
