Homework Y5 & Y2

HELP!

My DD's are Y5 and Y2 and get weekly homework. It's such a battle, from getting them to sit down and do it to getting them to engage properly as they go. Majority of it isn't difficult but they definitely need our help to read and understand the tasks properly etc so can't just yet be left to their own devices. All they through my Y5 DD is ratty and aggressive, insisting she knows best and getting annoyed with the laptop and then blaming me when she gets things wrong etc. How do I make this easier? How does everyone else approach it? There never seems to be the right time over the weekend to get it done, I seem to be constantly nagging and harassing them to sit down to it!!

By Y5 she should be able to do her homework independently, if she can't the homework is not an appropriate level so I'd speak to her teacher.

For the Y2 I would explain the task and then let her get on with it as much as she wants to/can. Let her take the consequences of not doing it/not doing it well at school. Again, if it is significantly beyond her ability and she is needing lots of help then speak to the school.

I would do it if possible after school and not on the weekend. They need some time off from school.

Can anyone here thing of anything useful that they learnt by doing school homework? Anyone?

Exactly my point. If they don’t want to do homework then so be it.

Reading has been quite useful for me.

I think writing and maths have also been helpful.
