"Well, you don't just stick them all together in the bath." Why not?

My MIL said this on the phone to me as I was getting my two, and a spare two, into the bath.

The youngest is 3. The oldest is 6. WTF? Why wouldn't I put them all in the bath together?

My two used to go in together (now consecutively most of the time though on occasion they still share). Share the same water too. ILs empty and refill bath in between which I think is overkill (ds2 doesn't do anything yet).
Used to share bath with my three brothers until my older brother hit 8-9 ish and got my own bath when I was 8-9 ish. I got second or third hand water. My older brother third or fourth hand water.

ROFL at the goings-on in camillas henhouse.

I throw all 3 of mine in together too.

QuintessentialShadowOfSnowball · 12/12/2007 19:49

But when they are your own you know what they have been up to in the day, you know the state of their pants / nappies, etc, so that is quite different.

frostythesnowmum · 12/12/2007 19:56

My mum used to bath my sister and I together until she caught me standing up and peeing on her head - perhaps your mil knows my mum and she has relayed this story

moljam · 12/12/2007 19:57

god,im dreading the day when my 3 dont want to bath together-it would take ages!mine love it but dd does occasionally ask for seperate to she can stretch out.also our bath is fairly small so what with children and toys theres not alot of room for washing.i used to love family baths.

This has made me remember how when I was a child we went to stay with my parents uni friends and their boys. This was the first time we had ever met the boys. They were about the same age as my younger sister and me. They had been really excited about us coming to stay and we were all sharing a room (was for a good few days I think). Then their mum made me and her eldest DS have a bath together - I was nearly 10 I think and had just started getting embarassed about such things. Insisted on wearing my swimming costume and remember feeling really mortified! I was such a little prude .
My 2 bath together and if I had children staying I would put them in too (if the parents were happy with it). I know that I'll really miss the bathing together stage when they are bigger.

Hulababy · 12/12/2007 20:06

DD has often had baths with any staying children - her cousin, friend's children, etc. And she has had baths at other children's houses. DD loves it - as an only child she dosen't get the chance for shared bathtime fun very often.

I know she had a fab time at one of her friend's houses earlier this year. The 6 girls (all from the same reception class) all jumped into this girl's big spa bath together and had heaps of fun splashing about. The mums were all fine about it, 3 of us were there, the other three not but happy for them to go in. It was just innocent fun, and handy as it was a late end to a playdate so bathtime was done before we got home.

So long as other parents are happy I can't see the problem.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/12/2007 20:48

Oh, I wouldn't do it if the parents weren't happy, or, for that matter, if they kids weren't happy! I'm not doing anything other parents aren't ok with, or shoving kids into baths against their wills!

I don't tend to much these days, since the day I caught them (boys!) standing up in the bath and aiming across the room to the loo. Aiming Badly, I should add...

TripleyXmasTippleTigger · 12/12/2007 21:05

I have five year old triplets and they all share the same bath (BGB) but only because I am tight and don't want to spend money and waste water running three baths

When they were smaller(as in size) they all used to jump in with daddy whilst I put my feet up!!!!!

TripleyXmasTippleTigger · 12/12/2007 21:06

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I don't even know what kids I have

That should be GBG!!!!!!!

Anna8888 · 12/12/2007 21:11

I bung my 5 in at once! We have a larger than average bath and just pop them all in and hose them down with the shower attachment! They're 6, (nearly 7),5,5,4 and 3 btw

BellaDonna79 · 14/12/2007 15:51

thats GBGBG btw!

MegaLegs · 14/12/2007 15:54

Mine don't all fit anymore . But whenever we stay at friends or holiday with friends the bath/shower is generally a free for all. (Amongst the children you understand!!)

awayinNaeManger · 14/12/2007 15:58

just reading this has made me want to go have a bath with my DS. wait. that sounds dodgy. but you lot know what i mean.

PortAndLemonaid · 14/12/2007 16:04

Our bath is a bit poky -- you can fit in an adult and a small child or )probably, not that I've ever tried) three small children, but not two adults and I suspect four children would be pushing it.

No objection in principle, mind, purely a concern over practicality.

qwertpoiuy · 14/12/2007 22:40

When I was a child and teenager, 4 or more of us would use the same bathwater. I'd always get in first, followed by my mother, then brothers and finally my father - all for about 15 minutes each. We'd just heat up the water with the hot tap if it was getting cold. It wasn't until I was 19 I realised other families didn't do it like that! I was staying at my cousin's, she had a bath and I said I'd get in after her - I was horrified to see the bath empty when I got there, and I had to run a whole new bath! I felt it was a sinful waste of good water to let it down the plughole after just one person having bathed in it!
I still think it's more environmentally friendly!

qwertpoiuy · 14/12/2007 22:41

BTW, we didn't all bath together at the same time!!!

TooTickyDoves · 14/12/2007 22:45

Mine often bath together, or in different combinations, or with me. They are 11, 8, 6 and 2.

Bouncingturtle · 15/12/2007 10:27

It's very eco-friendly - i had baths with my cousins when I grew up and had baths with my mum or my dad when I was a littlie.

One word of caution though - unless you have a double ended bath designed for 2 people and had extra supports in the floor put in, it is not recommended for two adults in at the same time! Could cause stress on joints and make the bath part company with the wall, leading to leaks.
Only reason I know this was when DH and I were looking at refitting bathroom in old house we investigated getting one of those baths but then we saw how expensive it was going to be as we'd need extra joists in the floor! But a few kiddies would be fine, I would have thought - though 5 would be a squash!
