11 week old cries hysterically every night at 7pm

Posting because I am at a loss and nothing seems to help - our otherwise cheery, calm 11 week old completely loses it every night at around 7pm. Yesterday he cried so intensely that he burst a blood vessel in his eye. we have tried everything - timed naps during the day, not going out in case he gets over stimulated, a bath before bed, no bath before bed but it always inevitably ends in a complete meltdown.

Is this normal? Will he grow out of it? It often takes him a good 2-3 hours to settle (and by settle I mean stop screaming so hard he can barely breathe) and I just can’t help but feel like I’m failing at being his mum.

Argh. It's awful. Ours was soothed by a soother, and sitting in the bouncer with an annoying glow worm thing that played tinkly lullabies. Got it cheap in Sainsbury and was the BEST money ever spent as it turned out.

Ah colic. I do not miss that. My DD would wail the house down at 6pm every evening like clockwork. 'The witching hour' was what some helpful soul termed it, which is bloody bollocks because it went on for a lot longer than an hour let me tell you! They never tell you about these bits do they? Grin

Infacol, that tiger hold thing and keeping her moving worked for us and it did pass. Eventually.

@biscuitcat

Colic is just awful, mine is just growing out of it now. I found that gripe water (the Boots own brand one is what we used) made a difference - given using the calpol syringe as I didn't think I could get a spoon into a screaming baby's mouth! And as a pp said, if you can get someone to hold baby for a while it makes a huge difference, especially if you take yourself somewhere you can't hear the crying. It will pass but it's bloody horrible until it does xx
My baby responds really well to gripe water too.

Bringing memories back for me too. The dreaded colic.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 05/11/2021 07:46

The other thing to think about is to get down to his eye level and look at what happens around him in the room he is in. Is there a sudden dark shadow? Does the smell of the room change? Does the hearing make a scary noise? We had this with one of my DC and realised it was a dark shadow in the room when we turned on the sidelights that seemed to frighten him.

Gosh, your post suddenly brought back memories.
Not my baby, but a good friend's first born had colic. I used to go round early evening and take turns walking him round and round their small downstairs rooms. The noise... the distressed face.
But, as everyone says, he grew out of it. That friend went on to have three more children, none of whom suffered from colic.

SmallWaistFatFace · 05/11/2021 07:59

The and my partner called this The Bitching Hour as our son would start up every night at exactly 7pm! We put him in front of the cooker hood for some white noise. He grew out of it but it was very odd

What milk is he on?

There's some medicines available and also look up colic massage on YouTube. There's method's you can use to relive the gas.

Good luck. Hope it passes soon it's so awful to see them in pain.

Colic 🥴 the struggle is real!! My ds did this 7-9 every night without fail. Could do nothing with him until he eventually wore himself out. Also he had CMPA and acid reflux issues. Which I think all played a part to xx

BlueShirtGirl · 06/11/2021 19:25

Oh my! My DD is/was like this too!! I moved her evening routine earlier so start at 6pm and she is in bed by 7 now. Also, we eventually found out she likes to ‘feed up’ so has extra feeds between 4-7 (like, lots of milk!!) which fill her up and satisfy her. Took us a few weeks to find out what works for her and now evenings are (mostly) a breeze.

Hi Op,

How do you feed your little one? Breast or bottle?
