What do your crawlers/cruisers wear outside?

I'm certain the wisdom of mumsnet will have a good answer for this one, I'm just too sleep deprived to think clearly this week!

What do you put a crawling baby in to go outside? My eldest didn't crawl so this wasn't an issue as I could plonk her on a picnic blanket with a waterproof bottom until she could walk. Do they wear shoes (which I thought was a no-no until they were walking, but then they'll get cold/wet toes!)? Some sort of all over waterproof thingummy? Should I be protecting their hands from cold/wet/mud?

It seems like a stupid conundrum to have, I'm certain there's a really obvious answer, but I don't see any other crawlers at the playground at the moment so don't know what it is!

I have used baby mocs, like slipper socks, also Stonz waterproof booties. Both pretty good.

Good question - when my first was at this stage all the playgrounds were closed for lockdown, so I'm also unsure what to do for my second now. It's such an awkward stage to be in a playground, especially when it's been raining. I guess I'll get her some waterproof trousers. Or maybe just relocate to indoor soft play until she can walk properly!

I put my sons in anything and everything. Honestly the amount of washing I had was unreal Blush. I got them first walkers and waterproofs as soon as they were cruising around the park fence etc.

Waterproof dungarees like Togs also good, or fleece clothes as they are less water absorbent and wash/dry quickly. Yes to waterproof or fleece gloves, too.

TinyTeachr · 04/11/2021 14:19

@ReturntoSpamfritters Ahhh, I didn't know you could get waterproof booties! Genius! Definitely going to get some of those if I can get them in a small enough size. Good idea about the fleece too. They'll probably only keep the gloves on for 30s, but at least I'll have tried!

@Calicoqueen mine are still crawling everywhere.... I worry about them getting cold and damp if they are in ordinary clothes but they will NOT stay on a blanket for more than about a minute!

@BrunoJenkins the soft play near me has become quite expensive - you pay the same as you used to for a whole day but can only stay for an hour at most (and if you're late, obviously much less). I've got twins, and sometimes find arriving at a specific time a bit stressful so soft play is only for a special treat for us at the moment

yeah, this is me. DD is on the verge of walking but not quite yet, nursery has a lovely outdoor area and I feel like it's got cold all of a sudden and now I'm that terrible parent whose child is under-attired for the weather. She has a nice warm coat but obviously that's not much use on her legs. I've ordered a fleecy snowsuit and a puddlesuit - the idea being to layer rather than buy one warm, waterproof suit. The fleecy is supposedly water-resistant so I guess the puddlesuit won't actually get much use until she's walking as she'll be under the rain cover in the buggy when it's tipping it down. Nursery required that she have footwear with soles to go outside so I got some Step-Ons - more sturdy than the moccasin soled things that a PP mentioned (we also have those for indoors - slippy wooden floors) but less of a faff than getting proper shoes fitted, and cheaper. Though it seems all the other kids at nursery have proper shoes... gonna get her some as soon as we can get to a shoeshop (and yes, I had read it's better for them learning to walk without shoes on, but wearing them outside only is presumably not gonna be an issue). Also scrambling to get gloves and a hat sorted - how did it suddenly get cold so quickly?!

Stonz come in tiny sizes, and I see other places do similar bootees now. Normal gloves or mittens never stayed on, the only ones which did were those ones which go up to the elbow! They were brilliant, but I have had a quick Google and can't find them now Sad

Etherealhedgehog · 05/11/2021 19:55

Related - has anyone found any mittens - like the kind that have a thumb so actually allow some use of hand - that are the right size for a 13 month old? The only ones I can find are one size fits all for 1-3 and, unsurprisingly, they totally engulf her hand. Where are the tiny mittens!?

Etherealhedgehog · 05/11/2021 19:57

@ReturntoSpamfritters actually just saw that Stonz do mittens as well as bootees - thanks!

You're welcome Smile

DD has a puddlesuit and a pair of waterproof booties. Works best if the booties go on under the puddlesuit, otherwise the booties can get damp at the top. She stays dry really well in that.

She also has an fleece snowsuit which she wears under if it's really cold, or if it's just a bit cold she'll just have a jumper (as well as normal clothes, obviously!)
