Baby Sleeps with Mouth Open - Normal?

My DS is coming up to four months old. He contact naps during the day, and he always has his mouth wide open. I’ve never thought much of it, but just decided to do a quick google, and what’s coming up seems to suggest it’s not normal snd that it indicates that he’s not able to breathe well through his nose. Just wanted to ask other mums if their LOs sleep with their mouths open, or if this is actually unusual and something I need to inform my GP of?!

I think some do and some don't. DS (9) and I both sleep with our heads thrown back and our mouths open, because it's easier to breathe that way, but there's nothing wrong with us, it's just the way we are. DH and DD breathe though their noses, all tidily and snore like bears.

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername can you recall if your DS slept with his mouth open as a baby? Apparently it’s not typical in small babies (my DS is 4 months and has slept with his mouth open from being very small). I can’t say I’ve noticed him doing it in the night, perhaps it’s just something he does when asleep on me in certain positions x

My youngest always slept with his mouth wide open from birth until he was almost one and still does it now once he's in a deep sleep. He's the only one of mine that didn't have a dummy because he could never keep it in when he was asleep!

@jennyt82 that may be why we’ve never been able to get him to take a dummy! He’s breastfed though and doesn’t seem to have any issue with breathing while feeding x

Mine always sleeps with her mouth open when she sleeps on me! She doesn't so much in her cot. It didn't cross my mind of it being an issue at all. She breathes fine! She's 10months now

@GuruLuru I’ll have to pay attention the next few nights and see if he does it when he’s in his crib. The only reason I started to wonder if it’s normal is because it can be linked to lip tie, which we believe he has. He also had a tongue tie, but that’s been snipped x

My baby is about the same age and sleeps with mouth wide open in some positions, but is still breathing through the nose it seems. Since the very first day, baby has done this when on us. Rarely does it in the next to me though.

MintGreenLife · 04/11/2021 11:27

@Flittingaboutagain must just be something they do when asleep i right etc! I can’t say I’ve noticed he has his mouth open when in his crib, but it’s only in the last two weeks we’ve actually been able to get him to sleep in his crib! I’ll have a little look at him tonight x

If it's playing on your mind may as well just ask the question with HV! Wont hurt to ask!

@GuruLuru good thinking ☺️
