Hello,
Our baby is 4 weeks old tomorrow and is having heart surgery on Thursday we only found out yesterday. I'm very emotional and can't think what we even need to take with us apart from the obvious- clothes, nappies etc
Any help with what to take would be great, thankyou

My 8 year-old had a few operations when he was a baby. These are the things you will need
Clothes, night things, washing stuff etc
Bottles and milk if you are bottle feeding, breast pump if you are breastfeeding (baby will have to fast before surgery and you will probably get engorged and leaky especially if the surgery is long)
Contact pyjama fairies if you would like a colourful gown for your baby to wear in theatre/afterwards
Something that smells of home to put in your baby's cot like a blanket or pillowcase
Phone, tablet, device to watch tv/read books/play games on and chargers(there will be a lot of sitting around and I soon found out you can be bored at the same time as being worried)about
Headphones for your devices, I always forget those
Buggy, for walks round the hospital to distract baby from being hungry and for when you are at the stage when baby is well enough to not be attached to monitors but not well enough to go home and you need food/coffee
Wheeled suitcase to put everything in. There might be a long distance from the car to the ward and then you will probably move from the children's ward to icu/hdu and back again
Big handbag/rucksack to put your valuables (phone/tablet etc) in as you don't want to leave them at your bed space when you go to the loo
Snacks for you
Bedding for you. You will get somewhere to sleep but they may give you a child size blanket and there are never enough pillows.

Take lots of photos. It may seem weird now but my 8 year old loves looking at photos of him in hospital.
If your baby struggles to sleep in a big bed/cot because they are used to a crib or Moses basket you can put rolled up towels/blankets in a pillowcase to make a kind of nest. If you ask, the hospital will probably be able to find one of those little goldfish bowl cots that they have in maternity/scbu if your baby won't settle.

Best of luck and hope everything goes well on Thursday.
