can she put her chin to her chest or does it hurt? how high is her temperature?

TenLordsaLapin · 11/12/2007 21:24

What TMMJ said. It doesn't hurt to take her to A&E, they would always rather see a small child than not. Do you have other children at home?

I'd take her tbh, better to be safe than sorry. At the very least ring NHD direct whilst she is settled.

Cashncarry · 11/12/2007 21:26

Do you have an out of hours doctor's service you can call rather than NHS Direct? They normally leave the details on your doctor's surgery answerphone. They might be able to send someone round within the hour to have a look.

I'm with the others - take her to a&e if you're worried. I'm a regular at my local and even though i've sometimes felt a bit daft afterwards, I'd rather the inconvenience than a night of worry

Desiderata · 11/12/2007 21:26

There's a very nasty coughing/vomiting virus going around at the moment.

I would follow the advice you've been given and get some official help.

Don't be surprised if she's sick this evening, though. Make some contingency plans, and fingers all crossed for you.

MaLopez · 11/12/2007 21:26

Also see if she can turn her head and her neck is not hurting. Not happy with the light sensitivity. Stop reading, A & E please.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 11/12/2007 21:26

I would take her in too but don't panic - it's just so she can be checked tonight rather than in the morning. They would much rather see you and send you home again than not see you.

notnowbernardimstuffingthebird · 11/12/2007 21:27

Call your Gp, which will give the out-of-hrs service number. Call them, they should arrange for you to talk to a Dr asap.

If she deteriorates in the next half hr or so, go to AandE

berolina · 11/12/2007 21:27

A&E. Refusal to be touched and light aversion ring alarm bells tbh.

there is a bad cough/virus going around..all got it here..however with little ones whenever I am worried I go straight to a+e or to walk in centre.Would rather be sent home being told its nothing than sit and worry all night

LadyOfTheFlowersXmasName · 11/12/2007 21:30

Either take her or ring NHS direct. The first questions they will ask you are the quations about Meningitis symptoms then go from there.
My bro recently had a case of viral menin. and didn't like the light and had to stay in hosp. for a bit and have some anti-b's.

When DS1 gets a temp where he feels hot all over, I am not allowed to touch him either although he always wants me to comfort him. I think it makes them feel hotter, but they want the comfort iyswim?

If she is settled and there is no rash, ring NHS, that's what I would do.
The rash does not always appear straight away if this is what you are suspecting so i would deffo either ring or take her to A&E to be checked.
Don't panic though whatever you do. You will make her feel uneasy and she will get more upset.

The rash isn't always present. It is from septicaemia and meningitis can occur without septicaemia. I wouldn't use absence of rash as a guide. Really, go to A&E or you'll be worrying all night.

Santasmissyontheside · 11/12/2007 21:33

my dd same age has just been really ill. temp, vomitting , throat red raw............

Santasmissyontheside · 11/12/2007 21:34

ring nhs direct you'll speak to a nurse

coby · 11/12/2007 21:45

Milliec - this was me 2 nights ago with DD2 19 months. Bad coughing fit, aversion to light, totally lethargic, temp of 40C but she did NOT have stiff neck or problems with neck movement.

I called NHS direct and they told me to take her to the doctor ASAP - this is what they routinely tell you to do if you, as the childs parent, are concerned that your child is very out of sorts.

DD2 also had a rash by the time I got her to the docs. It is nothing too serious hopefully just viral plus a chest infection.

Don't hang about, see a doc ASAP for your own sanity as well as your DDs health.

gigglewitchyouamerrychristmas · 11/12/2007 21:49

like everyone else - i'd take her to a&e or out of hours doctors (nhs direct take forever to reply / ring back, if you are really worried go to the other options)
they will never object to you taking an ill two-year old, better safe than sorry and all that.
good luck

Glad she is okay.

coby · 12/12/2007 12:21

glad you're feeling reassured and hope your DD gets better soon.

Clearly that woman has NO children - at least, I hope not!
