Chicken Pox Vaccine

I'm getting DD the chicken pox vaccine tomorrow. I stupidly haven't booked myself a day off work on the following day, or taken her out of nursery in anticipation of any side effects. Can anyone tell me if their child also had the vaccine, how they were after? Aware every child is different but just wondering what the overall experience was. Thank you!

Mine were absolutely fine
Even the actual injection was the easiest - didn’t even notice, let alone cry

We did precautionary calpol on the day but no side effects or illness afterwards

It’s a course of 2 jabs, and same experience for both - totally unaffected

No side effects at all and my dc had it at the same time as their tetanus, diphtheria and polio.

olivehater · 31/10/2021 08:29

No side effects for any of my three.

Literally no side effects here either, best decision I made!

No side effects for this or any other vaccine she had after she turned 1. She only reacted to her baby jabs.

There's a vaccine now? I thought just getting it gives the same effects as a vaccine...

Sunsetdive · 31/10/2021 14:01

Both mine had no reaction at all

LakeShoreD · 31/10/2021 14:13

Mine had the MMRV (chickenpox with the MMR) and had no reaction but if you’re worried about falling foul of the nursery exclusion policy/being sent for a covid test then I would book it on a Friday to be safe- I personally always do this with vaccines.

It'll give the same immunity but without the horrible symptoms. Im pretty convinced the only reason its not given as part of routine childhood vaccinations is because its not classed as a serious disease as such, so its much cheaper to let kids catch it and develop immunity than to fund a vaccine for every child.
GuruLuru · 31/10/2021 14:57

Yeah I understand that the vaccine isn't on NHS and has to be paid for? But saves the anguish of going through it. I had it twice as a kid (believe it or not!).

@BuildingBlocks1 how old is yours? Wondered when you can actually get it?

chocolatecerealcampingbrekkie · 31/10/2021 15:05

My sc were absolutely fine.

Poppy709 · 31/10/2021 16:21

My DS had no reaction at all, and with all his previous jabs he had a fever/been quite unsettled, chickenpox you wouldn’t know he’d had it. Was nervous getting it after feeling we’d only just got over the MMR side effects!!

Anybridget7 · 31/10/2021 19:21

No side effects here either.

Vaccine - 5 mins in Superdrug for an injection which doesn't hurt and causes no side effects

Getting it - at least a week off nursery/school, which means at least a week off work for one parent. 1 in a 100 chance of being seriously ill and needing to go to hospital (my godson ended up in ICU with fluid on his brain)
Risk to vision if spots develop in or around the eyes. Near certainty of scars
At least a week of an unwell, miserable and uncomfortable child

I know which I'll take..!

SW1amp · 01/11/2021 09:38

@GuruLuru

Unless its changed very recently, they can have it any time after 12 months, but not within a few weeks of other vaccines...

Its 2 doses a few weeks apart...

You can also get it if you've been exposed to chicken pox, and it should lessen the symptoms

It is part of the standard childhood vaccination schedule in a lot of counties, but the NHS doesn't want to pay for it, so you have to get it done privately

Most branches of SuperDrug do it, as will a lot of GP surgeries

Itsanewdah · 01/11/2021 10:21

No side effects for mine.
pre vaccine both of my cousins had chickenpox and ended up with severe facial and chest scaring (“mild case of chickenpox” apparently).
