What would you do? Pushchair/pram

Hi everyone,

My DD is 11 weeks old and quite a sturdy little one (now weighs around 15lbs and is holding head well). She really doesn't enjoy the carrycot attachment to our travel system and is now getting too big for it and doesn't have much room. She cries everytime she goes in it and barely ever will sleep in it. She enjoys being able to look around like when we have her in the sling.

My question to you lovely MNers is it really an issue to transfer her to the pushchair attachment? I have the egg model if that matters. I know it says to wait until they are 6 months but I was just wondering if it is actually harmful or is it just one of those things that is suggested?

Obviously I would have her reclined back as far as possible until she is older and is controlling her head fully. Thank you in advance Smile

Purists will say they must stay completely flat until 6 months. However, unless you’re keeping her in the pushchair all day long I fail to see the harm unless their head flips forward and restricts the airways.

We sold our carrycot after DD1 the champion refluxer refused to even entertain the idea. Was happiest in the seat unit reclined. With DD2 we’ve used the seat unit from birth with a newborn insert.

@Timeturnerplease thanks for your reply. I thought as much but it's good to have some reassurance it's not going to be bad for her. I searched online and it made it seem like it would damage her back or something! Hmm

There are strollers that are suitable from newborn- some have a newborn attachment in them.

I would only have a baby under 6 months in either a carrycot or a pram seat that lies flat and is recommended for infants under 6 months.
One of my prams didn't have a carry cot but came with a newborn insert for when fully reclined for under 6 months.

I'd not be putting an 11 week baby into a normal pram seat.

For what it's worth I don't know anyone who lasted the full recommended 6 months with baby lying flat in a carrycot.

Droppingdown · 30/10/2021 21:24

I’d just buy a newborn insert so support the head, and keep it as flat as possible. mine moved way before 6 months and are still surviving.

Kneller92 · 30/10/2021 21:43

@LolaSmiles do you know the reasons why this isn't recommended? I couldn't find anything other than because they need to be able to hold their heads up on the egg website and then on other forums it was saying it could damage the baby's back so wasn't sure what to believe?

Are you sure it isn’t because she actually wants to be in the sling close to you?
But yeah, if it was me I’d try another month and then swap. Just don’t leave her in there for hours

My son was in the pushchair section at 8 weeks as he outgrow the carry cot bit (always been way over 100th centile).

He had reflux, so it actually helped so much as he could be tilted slightly and he was much more content when in the pram.

mayblossominapril · 30/10/2021 21:53

I was really careful with my first. He was in the pram until he was 7 months (big pram)
My second had reflux, I already had a toddler to look after and she went in the pushchair part at 6 weeks on a slight recline.

Kneller92 · 30/10/2021 21:54

Our pushchair attachment reclines really far back and i have a well padded fur lined insert with footmuff but I wasn't sure if this would be enough to support her head. Obviously don't want to cause problems with her back but still want to be able to get out and about when DH is at work now carrycot is a no go and I can't wear the sling due to back problems.

Hi @Kneller92 - I have the egg pram; just buy the newborn insert. Problem solved Grin

Kneller92 · 30/10/2021 22:11

@StuckForAPressie I think I probably will do...I was just being a tight arse trying not to spend more money haha!

@DGFB she does much prefer the sling so it is possible but I can't wear it anymore unfortunately as I have problems with my back. When DH is home he wears the sling if we go out and she sleeps every time!

Kneller92
My understanding was it's linked to their ability to hold their head up, getting enough oxygen in, and also their back/hip development. I thought it was lie flat until 6 months, but ideally til they can sit upright.

To be honest, mine never had an issue with the carry cot or the lie flat newborn pod so I had no reason to want to ignore the guidelines.

Kneller92 · 30/10/2021 22:51

@LolaSmiles thanks for the info. I've ordered the newborn insert for my pushchair so hopefully she will like that more than the carrycot 🤞

We have a travel system. DS went from the car seat attachment to the upright stroller at 8 weeks because he’s very nosey. He was quite advanced though. If she slumps over or her head is a little wobbly then you will need to keep her reclined or get a newborn insert.
