I’m finding it difficult to wean my 9 months old. He suffers from eczema, which we’re managing with steroids and moisturising. At the moment his skin is clear. However, when offered food, he eats a tiny bit and then ends up scratching himself to the point where he bleeds and also once he starts he keeps going and is no longer interested in the food. This usually happens when he feeds himself.

I can spoon feed him porridge with some fruit mixed in, but everything else he refuses to be spoon fed.

He prefers to feed himself, but ends up scratching more as a behaviour. I noticed he scratches if he doesn’t like something, he’s having to chew something more, something new is offered. Once the scratching starts he will no longer be interested in eating.

Now how an earth do I get him to eat? He refuses to be spoon fed and ends up scratching if he feeds himself.

My DD had this too. We just used to push her hands away and make animated conversation about the food on her plate or sing songs that had hand actions in them (wind the bobbin up and happy and you know it etc). Basically distract her as much as possible from scratching. As soon as she starts scratching (even now) we immediately put cream on her (not the steroid cream) and it relieves the itching sensation.
