dioralyte and bactroban for 7 week old

Hello, asking incase any other parents have been through the same thing?
My 7 week old DD has been having explosive nappies once a day for a while and we’ve been back and forth to the doctors and today we seen a different dr and he’s said to ‘starve’ her for 24 hours and just give her 200ml of cooled boiled water and a sachet of the blackcurrant dioralyte and she’s had one bottle about an hour and a half ago and she seems okay in herself she is crying but I think it’s because she’s hungry but been told by the dr not to give any milk until 4pm tomorrow. She’s also been given bactroban 2% cream for behind her because it’s become all crusty and weepy but I’ve read the intrusions and it says not to give to anyone under 1 and she’s only 7 weeks old today, I totally understand he wouldn’t give anything that would hurt or harm her as he’s a dr but he’s super old school just takes a look at prescribes something straight away, so I’m just a bit worried to be honest (first time mum as you can tell) so please don’t judge me just wanting to know if anyone else is in the same position m, TIA!

No no no.

I’m sorry, OP, your doctor sounds insane. You don’t starve a 7 week old. Not ever.

I’m hoping someone medical will come along because I’m very much a layperson and my gut is SCREAMING that this is terrible advice- I’m just not medical enough to articulate why.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 29/10/2021 21:19

Give her a bottle OP and phone 111. The adviceyouve been given seems scarily outdated.

Lawnpop · 29/10/2021 21:20

I really don’t think a 7 week old should be going without milk. I’d feed as usual and seek a second opinion.

Eh? Doesn’t Dioralyte replace salts and minerals you lose from diarrhoea? That sounds totally bonkers. I don’t like that at all. Can you talk to another doctor?

MrsBungle · 29/10/2021 21:22

Goodness. I’ve never heard of starving a 7wo for 24 hours. I think I’d seek another medical opinion to be sure.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 29/10/2021 21:25

This is bad medical advice. Don't take it

BeHappyAndSmile · 29/10/2021 21:25

Oh please don't not feed her until tomorrow! Low blood sugar can be dangerous in a baby so young. Give a bottle and call 111 definitely. If it's the nappy rash that you're worried about, lots of time with nappy off to let air to it, only use water no baby wipes and thin layers of sudocreme or bepanthan(?) until you can get seen.

SnugKnights · 29/10/2021 21:26

Please ring 111 straight away and give her a bottle now. Have you thought about Cows Milk Protein Intolerance? My youngest had nappies like that before she changed to a dairy free formula and I cut out dairy as I was breastfeeding her as well.

TheCatInTheChat · 29/10/2021 21:27

Please don’t starve your baby. Sounds like terrible advice. Phone 111 if you’re worried.

BeHappyAndSmile · 29/10/2021 21:28

And also once you have a second opinion ask their thoughts on "starving" your baby as recommended and I'd potentially be making a complaint to your surgery about his advice. I'm not medically trained but that seems insane to me! Hope your little one recovers from the sore bum and explosive nappies soon, babies are a constant worry!

nocoolnamesleft · 29/10/2021 21:36

That is completely archaic advice. Far too young for dioralyte. Definitely keep going with milk feeds. If vomiting, go for smaller feeds more often. You don't say how long the diarrhoea has been lasting for, but if going on for ages would want to consider cows milk protein intolerance. I'd be less concerned about the bactroban: hardly anything is licenced for use in babies, so not uncommon to use drugs off licence.

Thank you everyone I had a feeling it wasn’t right so I rang 111 just before I put this thread up and was waiting for a gp to call back, she’s just rang back and said in no way should he have given that advice at all and it’s ‘crazy’ (her words) and to give her a feed now and need to send a stool sample off instead, someone mentioned cows milk intolerance that’s what I thought I mentioned thay to the gp (I read it online) and he said no and that was it really so hopefully we’ll have a stool sample sent off and she’s all cuddled up having a bottle, thank you so much everyone and it’s a rash behind her ear it is sorry I realised I didn’t put ear in! It’s all crusty and weeping with her 😩 so just wondering if that cream is okay! But obviously after that dr giving it to me it’s not going on her again haha

3dc here and I'd be ignoring that advice while I sought a 2nd opinion (and a thorough explanation of what they expected it to achieve and how if they agreed that not feeding for 24hrs was the best thing to do).

Get in touch with 111 or out of hours if you can contact them direct.

User0ne · 29/10/2021 21:47

Just read your 2nd post.

Good; sounds like you've found someone with some sense

TokenGinger · 29/10/2021 21:54

Explosive nappies were a sign of CMPA for my son. Are they mucusy?

Don't starve her though. That's crazy advice!

SnugKnights · 29/10/2021 22:04

If the stool sample comes back clear OP I would ask a different GP to prescribe an allergy formula if baby is formula fed. Try it for at least 2 weeks and see if there is an improvement. Does she have any other areas of skin that are dry or sore? Locally we have specialist feeding Health Visitors who can advise, after seeing various GP’s and 2 Consultants plus a private breastfeeding advisor with my youngest it was the HV who diagnosed CMPI and was right. It’s not always obvious because babies don’t always have lots of different symptoms.

Make a complaint to your surgery regarding the dangerous advice given when you have the time. Obviously getting your little one sorted is top of your priorities but if you hadn't thought to check and had just blindly followed that advice it could have been very upsetting for you and dd (at best) and potentially ended up a whole lot worse! Glad you've had some decent advice though. Good luck!
mayblossominapril · 29/10/2021 22:28

Explosive nappies and severe weight loss were the symptoms of CMPA in my second.
When she had croup at 8 months the advice I was given by a doctor was to prop her up with plenty of pillows in her cot. Needless to say I ignored that.
