For the past month or so my LO favourite sound is da-da. He’s da-dad’ing all day long and my DP is in 7th heaven because of this!
At what age they start to understand that da-da means actually dad and ma-ma is mummy and not just some random sounds they can make?

I always try to tell him “ say ma-ma” but I get shouted back da-da-da-da-da nonstop.
Kinda funny but it makes me a bit meh…

My dd's first sound was dada and it took a while before she said mama. Now at 14 months she makes a wide range of sounds but dada and mama are still just sounds, I believe. They all vary in terms of when they're attaching meaning to the sound and actually saying a word. I'd remind your DH and yourself that dada is usually the first noise as it's easier to say than mama and it doesn't actually mean 'daddy' unless she's obviously saying it to refer to your dh e.g. He walks in the room. If your LO is just saying it all the time at the moment then it is just a sound they're experimenting with. They will move on to the next sound before you know it!!

Also, bare in mind that some people are super quick to say this is their first word!! When my dd was babbling 'dada' in one time, by friends were adamant she was referring to her daddy. He was nowhere around at the time and she'd been making the noise all day! Just don't worry about it if people start saying your LO is a daddy's boy etc...!

There's no specific age. My two knew Mama was me at around 7 months- I could tell because they'd call for me using it. Neither said Dada until over a year. Like any milestone, the time they reach it varies.

It’s the easiest first sound for them to make. Very common for them to babble da da da da first.

The ‘m’ sound is harder and comes later.

It’s not personal!

Da da is easier to say. I tell DH that she's after him so I can go and hide in the kitchen 😆

Oh thank you!
I already started to think that we don’t have that special bond or something ridiculous like that.
FTM here if someone didn’t notice. Blush

We are a two mum family - no Dada in the house! - and both our DC started with da da da da Smile
