Bloody in nappy

DD is 15 weeks old and has on and off had stringy bits of blood (red) in her stools. When it first happened I called 111 and the GP I spoke to said it could be blood from a burst capillary and was nothing to worry about as DD was happy in herself, no temp etc.

It happened again and I spoke to my HV who said speak to Gp which I did and GP said it was nothing to worry about as DD was fine in herself etc. Probs burst capillary.

It’s been happening on and off since but not lots of blood, just little specks and DD has been fine otherwise. However today there was a bit more blood than usual however DD has been fine all day, happy, no temp, just her normal self.

I keep being told this is normal but I’m not sure whether it is normal to have been going on for so long? I’m going to call the GP again but does anyone have any experience of this? It’s only when she poos.

I am BF DD but I also BF DS (2.5) and he was never like this!

I should say it’s bright red blood not black or anything

Are your nipples bleeding at all? This explained my dds blood in nappies.

Inlander · 28/10/2021 18:54

@NaturalBlue thanks for the reply. No they aren’t bleeding. Google tells me it could be a dairy sensitivity but I barely have any milk or cheese as I like to have oat milk in my tea (although I did have a slice of cake today)

I'd question CMPA - that's what we were told blood in poo was most like caused by. Our was at 6 weeks after a history of very bad neonatal rash. Does he have any other signs that could point to CMPA? If he were mine I'd cut dairy out of your diet and see if it stops. Good luck @Inlander

Sorry she not he!!

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 28/10/2021 18:57

Oh - I thought I didn't have much dairy either....and then realised there was whey and milk in all sorts of things!!

Aimee1987 · 28/10/2021 19:06

It may be CMPA if you are almost dairy free it may be why it's happening so I intermittently. If you wanted to test it you could try completly eradicating dairy. So that means 6 weeks of checking everything you eat for hidden dairy ( it's inalot of things that you wouldn't necessarily think of).
After 6 weeks do the dairy challenge. This means eating a single adult yogurt and watching for 3 days. If no reaction eat a yogurt every day and watch for a build up reaction.

It may not be cmpa but go back to gp and fight for a referral. Blood in the stool especially if it's happening more then once is not normal. The gp should not be robbing you off.
Also if you do find the symptoms disappear and reappear after the dairy challenge still go back to the gp and make sure you get a pediatric dietician for weaning.
I remember thinking my baby just has some reflux cmpa got suggested to me when he was 3 months. I went dairy free and the difference in him was amazing. He was so much more content, slept better, stopped cluster feeding. And on challenge all these behaviours came back. Hes nearly 2 now has multiple allergies but all very manageable

I had very similar. Both b fed, never had this with my first. Second ones nappies were very moucousy from about 8 weeks and also had specks of red blood in them. Also went through a stage of being extremely watery and changing him quite a bit in the middle of the night. Appeared to get slowly better and then he went on solids and it cleared. We were referred to paed and all tests came back clear. He's 20 months now, never did find the cause.

Opalfeet · 29/10/2021 00:16

Oh and I did all the cutting out of different stuff and it wasn't any of that

Inlander · 30/10/2021 09:02

Thank you everyone! I’m going to be more conscious about cutting out dairy and see if that makes a difference 🤞

@Inlander, honestly I wouldn't bet on it. But good luck

Dcrolo12345 · 30/10/2021 11:56

I would take them to a&e if the docter won’t see you , that needs checking out. My baby had bloody mucous in his nappies about the same age and I took them to a&e they couldn’t find a cause but they said I was right getting it checked out. I think he could of had cmpa though I hadn’t heard of it at the time , very very constipated despite only being breastfed- no solids and Very bad smelling wind.

Opalfeet · 30/10/2021 12:07

Absolutely should be referred to paed to investigate and monitor. I went through excluding different foods to no avail though. Not everything is cmpa and it is actually quite uncommon with b fed babies.

Inlander · 31/10/2021 19:08

Thank you all! I’ve got a call with the GP this week so hopefully I’ll get a referral. Funnily enough I haven’t had anything with dairy in it for the past few days and there has barely been any of the blood. Could just be a fluke

Might be related @Inlander keep it up and see. They'll recommend being free for six weeks and then reintroducing

Sixtycats · 04/11/2021 16:38

You've probably already looked into this, but could it be her period at all? I know it's only when she poops but I wonder if it's the straining. Good luck mumma x

Inlander · 04/11/2021 23:05

@Sixtycats thanks I didn’t think of that but I didn’t think that happened past the newborn stage? The GP is doing a referral but doesn’t seem worried so we’ll see what happens! Touch wood she seems ok in herself. Just this issue bless her.

@Inlander you're probably right! 15 weeks is so tiny, I just wondered if it could still be going on. If she seems like her normal self and it isn't bothering her then fingers crossed it's just some irritation or that. Good luck!!
