Help me with my 7 week old

Hi
So i need advice regarding my 7 week old. Since we brought him home, he was reluctant to sleep in his crib. He would only sleep if my husband and i held him upright (we had to take shifts). He would scream if we lay him down. I was breastfeeding him and topping him up with formula when needed (Hipp). Things were getting worse, he would scream inbetween feeds and after feeds, constant hiccups, gurgling and then swallowing spit up then screaming. At first i was sure he had colic but then i thought he had silent acid reflux. Doctor agreed and gave us infant gaviscon. I used this with my older son and wasnt impressed but thought i would give this a try. Its not great with breastfeeding and baby was reluctant to take paste. I have now started giving formula and expressed breastmilk more often now. We then decided to try Aptamil comfort milk although I'm not seeing any difference/improvement. Has anyone got any advice? Nothing seems to settle him, ive tried everything, baby sling, having crib at an angle, etc. Nothing. He screams in the car when im taking him for a walk. I know colic reaches its peak at 6 to 8 weeks but i hate hearing him in pain.

Very much sounds like it could be cmpa. My lo has it but is also allergic to soya as the proteins are very similar. The silent reflux is usually as symptom of something else I.e the alllergy that is causing it rather than just being a stand alone thing.
Omeprazole still gave my lo horrible wind so we tried lansoprazole which helped much more and didn't seem to give him the wind that omeprazole is common for causing.
I had to go dairy free as I was breastfeeding and my little darling point blank refused a bottle so formula was unfortunately not an option 🙄 but I would definitely try a different formula. There's a CMPA support group on Facebook with plenty of mums who will happily give suggestions of formulas you can try.
Hope this helps but please feel free to ask any questions. I know how many endless nights I spent googling things to try and get to the bottom of it!

And seeing as you're now formula feeding, the dairy should completely leeave his system in 3 weeks and his screaming will have stopped, so you should know then if it's CMPA. And if it hasn't, it could be the soya because it's so similar to cow's milk (my little boy reacted to soya yoghurt so I had to avoid that too). But I'd really advise you check out the facebook group, it's incredibly helpful.

Hi OP, sorry to hear you are having such problem. Im having the same with my son and it's not much fun for anyone!

I saw a private paediatrician on Wednesday and frankly the difference in a couple of days have been amazing. If you can afford it or have health insurance, I would definitely recommend you do this.

I was advised it was reflux and he was prescribed omeprazole. The GP advised it may be a CMPA and i went dairy free. The paediatrician however said that he thought it was an over supply issue and basically I have been over feeding him (he was very nice about it!) My DS had been putting on weight and basically throwing everything else up, that his body didn't need. He wasn't getting the hind milk (filling up on fore milk) and this was making him gassy. He advised to pump 30 mls of milk before each feed. They will also mean my DS will get the hind milk. Once we have established that it is an over supply problem, I can start to take steps to reduce my supply under medical supervision.

He didn't rule out CMPA and told me to avoid soya as well because (I think he said!) the protein is very similar to cows milk and if they have a CMPA they may also have a soya allergy (or something like that!

I also went to a cranial osteopath and found that it helped (we used the same one as with my first DS) We have only had one session and I anticipate it's going to take a few sessions to really make a lasting difference.

Since we have changed the feeding regime my DS is so much more relaxed, slept 7 hours straight last night (first time he has gone more than 3 hours!!) and is so much happier in himself. I can't believe the difference so quickly. Especially as I have spoken to so many HV. The last one said it definitely wasn't a breastfeeding problem and she couldn't help me.

Unfortunately the paediatrician also picked up a physical problem (which should have been picked up by the GP at the 6 week check) so I absolutely don't trust the GP to do anything right!

I hope you find the solution soon

That sounds like cmpa symptoms. And not all babies have skin problems with cmpa. If you need to see someone soon then I would definitely recommend you go to children's A&E and don't leave till you see a pediatrician. Done that with my lo because GP was useless and called me neurotic. Good luck x
