Sterilising bottles

Hi, I was looking for some advice please. My newborn baby is formula fed and at night we have been using the SMA starter packs but they are getting expensive, so we are looking to use the liquid cartons instead, and pour into our own bottles.

My question is, how long will a bottle stay sterile? I was planning on taking a few sterilised bottles to bed with me and pouring the milk in from the carton when my baby wants feeding. However, my steriliser which is the MAM microwave steam steriliser, says the bottles only remain sterile if you leave them in the steriliser with the lid on. But I wanted to build the bottles up and take to bed with me to save going downstairs and having to sterilise one each time.

So if I sterilise and build the bottles up, how long will they stay sterile? I can’t find an answer to this anywhere online. They are still a bit wet inside too when they come out of the steriliser, and you can’t dry them as the cloth won’t be sterile. Will a bit of residual water from the steam be an issue?

Thanks in advance!

I was under the impression that if you take them out of the steriliser and assemble them then the bottles remain sterile for 24 hours. I think that’s what it says on our steriliser instructions and it’s certainly the approach we have followed!

Assemble the bottles and they are ok for 24 hours

Pretty sure it's 24 hours too. I've done it when going out and about without issue.
I also premake bottles with powder formula, rapidly cool and store in back of fridge for no more than 24 hours. Just warm up as needed and much cheaper than the ready made cartons/bottles.

Yup, assemble the bottles and they are good for 24 hours.

Thanks for your help everyone! Just to double check, does it matter that some of the water from the steam will be left in them for 24 hours? I guess the water is sterile so won’t be an issue?

Just shake out the water but it is sterile anyway

I found this so confusing then as he got older I thought I'm stressing unnecessarily! You'll be fine taking them out and taking to bed.

The instructions on our steriliser say not to dry the bottles, so I’ve always assumed the water is fine!
