Do I wake baby to feed?

Have been blessed with an amazing sleeper at 6 weeks. Had our record of 7 hours straight overnight.

Sometimes after 2 hours or so he makes some noises that sound grizzly and vaguely distressed but he doesn't fully wake up and cry, then before I know it I've fallen asleep and wake up to silence.

If he was hungry at this time would he wake himself up and properly cry? My gut instinct is that he probably would but I don't want to be cruel in letting him "ride out" these episodes?

How's his weight? If he's gained back any he's lost and there are no concerns I wouldn't wake him.
I asked my midwife about this and she said 'are you mad'Grin
Congratulations Thanks

That's not medical opinion obviously

Thanks @iamtheoneandonlyyy! Yes he is putting on weight well and no concerns from HV. Are you blessed with a good sleeper too?!

My DD was sleeping through for decent chunks (7 or so hours) from around 8 weeks. It freaked me out at first because all I’d ever heard was about how normal is was for babies to wake every couple of hours to feed.

However she was gaining weight and fed plenty during the day, so I eventually stopped worrying and enjoyed the sleep!

I think there’s a lack of advice around how to move on from the very very newborn stage (when it is advised to wake and feed), but from what I’ve read since as long as they are gaining weight it’s fine for them to sleep for longer stretches without topping up. Hope your DS continues to be a great sleeper!

Thanks @Grasshopper90 reassuring to hear!

My boys both slept through from 9 weeks (10pm-6am) but were feeding more regularly during the day and still getting their feeds in across the 24 hours. I bottle fed which I think makes a difference.

I was blessed with an early all night sleeper too! For the first couple of weeks I set an alarm to wake me up, so that I could wake my DD up to feed her 🤦‍♀️ the health visitor told me in kinder words that I was an idiot. As long as baby has gained back any weight lost at birth, it's fine to let them sleep through 😊

Mybalconyiscracking · 27/10/2021 06:31

Never wake a sleeping baby!

One of the best pieces of parenting advice I was given.

littlejalapeno · 27/10/2021 07:00

Isn’t it weight over age? So a 7 week inks that weighs 7 pounds will wake to feed more, but if your baby weighs 9 pounds (for example) at 7 weeks, there more like an older baby who can go for longer? Totally unscientific of course but anecdotally heavier babies that are gaining well tend to wake less?

linerforlife · 27/10/2021 07:07

My EBF baby would regularly do that length of sleep at that age, I never woke her as she was gaining weight well. Wish she still slept that well now Grin

SundayTwizzle · 27/10/2021 08:07

My HV said to wait until 12 weeks to let DD sleep longer than 6 hours without a feed but seems like I'm in the minority!

No mine were all wake up wallys 😂
Enjoy it and hope it stays good for you!

Abitlost2 · 27/10/2021 09:32

Are you formula feeding? IIRC I think bf babies need to be fed more as less calories than formula and to maintain supply. All my newborns were very sleepy ( changed around 4 months though...) so I set an alarm to feed them.

Abitlost2 · 27/10/2021 09:32

I was bf though.
