My 2 year old holds a spoon and fork wrong

I am currently teaching my dd to use a fork and spoon. She can hold them and get them into her mouth but she turns it upside down before it gets there so depending on what she is eating it falls off.
Any ideas how I can teach her to turn it round??

That's normal, just give it time.
You can get shaped cutlery that might make a difference though.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 25/10/2021 18:24

She is 2!!

Give her time

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 25/10/2021 18:25

It's normal, at 2 her gross motor skills aren't yet developed.

She will work it out, you probably did something just as idiotic endearing at her age.

They get quite efficient at shovelling it in so she will work out that right way up = more food.

Just leave her to it and see where she is in six months' time.

Poocalypso · 25/10/2021 18:28

My 6yo barely gets this done..

moostermum · 25/10/2021 18:31

My 13yo holds the wrong way round but still gets food in 😂

PanicBuyingSprouts · 25/10/2021 18:35

Agree, it's totally normal, she's 2!

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 25/10/2021 18:35

Yes, but does she know the difference between a salad fork and a fish fork? (Sorry) Wink

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 25/10/2021 18:37

you can't be serious

she's 2. leave her be

Toottooot · 25/10/2021 18:39

Be thankful your child uses cutlery. Many at that age still only want to use hands. She’ll learn when she’s ready.

bloodywhitecat · 25/10/2021 18:39

It is a developmental thing rather than something you haven't taught her, she will figure it out for herself so don't worry.

Clockers41 · 25/10/2021 18:42

My 9 year old struggles - drives me bonkers. At 2 he was still eating with his hands - don't sweat it

SomebodysMum · 25/10/2021 21:00

That used to drive me batshit. Even though I knew it was totally normal for her age I just found it so so frustrating - like you made it that far sweetheart, why did you have to ruin it at the end?! It was absolutely irrational how cross it made me.

I gave up for about 6 weeks and gave her foods she could just eat with her fingers, when we tried it again she was better - not 100% granted, but at least 80% of the time the cutlery stayed the right way up all the way. She’s nearly 3 and can still make a massive mess sometimes but that’s another story.

Arsewangry · 26/10/2021 15:32

Crikey. Threads like this make me feel like a rubbish parent. My three year old still shovels spaghetti in his mouth with his hands.

Privatesector · 26/10/2021 15:34

2 years old!? Dear god, my 19 year old still doesn't hold his fork properly much to my despair

Rosesareyellow · 26/10/2021 15:37

I think when DS was two he was still mostly using his fingers (fork was available, but interest in it limited) a used a spoon for anything where fingers didn’t work. Or picking up food to then place on his fork, then put in his mouth… He’s perfectly able to use all his cutlery now (he’s now 4). They figure it out.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 26/10/2021 15:40

Totally normal, it’s what they do at two.

Life isn’t a race, let it come to her naturally when she’s at that developmental stage. For now just let her keep learning by doing.

plinkplinkfizzer · 26/10/2021 15:47

At least you are giving your child cutlery , I have read reports from primary schools that children turn up never having used cutlery . So don't worry she will get it .

SilverTonguedDevil · 26/10/2021 15:47

Gosh, your child is such a failure!
My one year old can cook and feed himself while simultaneously reading War and Peace and conducting the London Symphony orchestra.

@SilverTonguedDevil

not much to brag about then.
mine could do all that at 6m.

scully29 · 26/10/2021 16:20

Mine wrote War & Peace and conducts the London Symphony Orchestra, with his cutlery. Did it at 4 months. Just saying.

War & peace was first published in 1867 The London Symphony Orchestra was established in 1904

So you and your child can time travel as well. That's nice

🤣

Sometimes my two year old refuses to use cutlery at all, other times he seems totally proficient, give her a bit of time, I am sure she will get there soon enough.
ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2021 17:27

She's learning the effect of curvature. Excellent.Grin

Feeding her more soup might motivate her, I suppose...

Mine didn't master holding her knife and fork properly till another little girl showed her how in reception, along with how to pronounce 'yellow' rather than 'lellow'.Grin
