Advice about 15 month old please? Can you help?

I'm sure this is just another one of those horrible phases toddlers go through, but just looking for any advice or tips to support me managing him with this.

He is 15 months and usually a very good sleeper and cheerful boy. He has just started waking up at around 3/4am screaming and crying and staying awake for about 1.5 hrs. We can't put him down or he starts screaming again, but in the past if he ever woke up I would be able to give him a drink of water or calpol and rock him back to sleep in my arms. Not so anymore! It's like he hates being in my arms, wriggles away, doesn't want hands or arms around him etc. He lies with eyes wide open for 1.5 hours with bits of horrible scream / crying in between and then being calm but awake. I even tried milk the other day which used to be failsafe in sending him to sleep but it didn't work! He won't go into cot awake and gets really distressed. Eventually after 1.5 hours in my arms he falls asleep. This has happened for 5 consecutive nights now Sad

Other things going on are that he's suddenly become a really fussy eater. He used to eat everything and loved vegetables, but recently he's only eaten toast and a few other nibbles of meat if we are lucky! I keep trying to put healthy meals in front of him but don't know what to do.

He recently went down to one nap. He only naps 1.hr 20mins a day but was sleeping 7-6.30 ish. Now we've got this chunk of time awake in the night.

Any advice or do I just plough on and hope it's a short phase? Thank you! ConfusedConfused

Hes probably got a bug or teething or both. Is he getting cold in the early hours too?

Olivegreenstrawberries · 22/10/2021 14:42

Mine has done eaxctly this for the last week, apart from the difference in eating. I'm exhausted!

I think it's just a case of ploughing on. Unless you think he's got something going on with his tummy to explain him being fussy with food and maybe his tummy is hurting in the morning? Or teething?

Who knows? It's all guess work isn't it!

Bring on when they can talk and tell you what's wrong.

Could he be getting his molars? Wehave a 15mo and he was like this the other night- I was a bit mystified and then a day or so later we noticed he had one coming through plus a canine (is that the right word for the ones on the side?!) Just a thought... If you can see any sign, ibuprofen is your answer!!

Miriam101 · 22/10/2021 15:26

Also 1hr 20 isn't a huge amount of sleep so he could possibly be over-tired (I think that's what the sleep gurus would probably tell you, but I'm no expert...) If they do two hours, even 2.5, at this age, that's perfect.

MooChops89 · 22/10/2021 15:32

Mine has just been through the same thing, I was starting to lose my mind a bit with lack of sleep but thankfully he seems to be coming out the other side - he's slept through the last 5 nights with one random waking in the middle.
In our case I think it was his molars. They all came through over the course of about 2 weeks.

RosencrantzandGuildenstern · 22/10/2021 20:30

Thanks everyone. @MooChops89 how long did the phase last?

He has all his teeth now, canines are halfway through and then that's it, so not sure it can still be that?

I guess it's just a developmental leap. I will cling on!!!

Are you sure he has all his teeth? Usually molars come last so could be that.

RosencrantzandGuildenstern · 22/10/2021 20:43

Yes, he's defiantly got all his teeth! We have been keeping a little chart with him in his red book.

Is he hungry when he wakes up? My ds always was, I gave him something boring a filling and he went back to sleep faster.
