My ds was 3 months last Christmas and I got him...nothing! But then I have a dd 20 months older so we had loads already.

ELC do a nice drum which has lights and sounds which ds really enjoys, I'll try and find a link for you.

popsycal · 12/11/2004 09:57

afew books for when he is a bit old
ELC rainmaker sound thingy?
ds was only 4 months at his first xmas....

Clayhead · 12/11/2004 09:59

this is the drum

the ELC radios are good too

I also had a lots of use out of one of these, a Buggy Activity Centre which you attach to your pushchair

I love the ELC rainmaker. Wonder if anyone will get me one for Christmas...?

collision · 12/11/2004 10:06

I would say nothing as he wont know and will be delighted with all the boxes and lights and tree that are surrounding him! This is the only year you will get away with it so make the most of it!!

Blackduck · 12/11/2004 10:25

nothing....(ds was 7 months last Christmas and we bought nothing...) believe me you will have loads from family so take the opportunity to save some money!

tex111 · 12/11/2004 10:46

What about a nice keepsake? I've seen some lovely 'My First Christmas' tree ornaments. You can even have them personalised. Or something like a silver tooth fairy box. He might have those things for the rest of his life and it would be a nice keepsake of his first Christmas.

marthamoo · 12/11/2004 10:49

I wouldn't bother - other people will get him stuff. Ds2 was two weeks old his first Christmas and we didn't get him a thing - he still had a massive pile of presents!

Blackduck · 12/11/2004 10:52

The Christmas Ornament idea is nice (my parents do this for ds each year...)

Lonelymum · 12/11/2004 10:53

Clothes for when he is the next size up? Perhaps you could buy something you wouldn't normally. Or something to decorate his room with, eg mobile?

nikkim · 12/11/2004 11:02

Our dd was a september baby so on her fist christmas we just wrapped up some if her nicer clothes she should need for the next stage a we knew family would buy her presents.

The nicer presents she got were, a footcast kit, a nice soft toy with attached rattles. sodt mirror and one of those graco playrings and a rainmaker which nevr failed to soothe her,

candy · 12/11/2004 12:13

I agree with tex111 - something that will last so you can always say "this was your 1st christmas present". We got our dd a china clock and she still loves it now, 10 yrs on.

LIZS · 12/11/2004 13:13

We did the first christmas ornament thing -stuffed stocking from Disney store on which I put their names. They love bringing them out each year.

He'll be starting to lift his head and roll so anything like a freestanding mirror or activity centre would be entertaining. dd also had a V- Tech Muttzart dog which played music to her and glowed when she cried in bed.

princesspeahead · 12/11/2004 13:20

not much!
but tomy do a brilliant thing which is a box of eggs - a carton with eggs in it whose lids come off to show chicks inside that squeak. it is impossible to describe while making it sound interesting, but it is 4.99 and will keep childen from about 5 months up to about 3 completely fascinated for some reason. highly recommended for all babies.
other than that, a couple of bath toys, maybe a rainmaker as someone suggested, or some toys he already has wrapped up again?!

blueteddy · 12/11/2004 13:25

I would also say nothing!
I did not buy ds2 anything last Christmas (he was 9 mths) as he did not know 1 way or the other, everyone else bought him things & it was the only year that we could get away with it.
Maybe I am just mean!!

Twiglett · 12/11/2004 13:45

Whatever you buy him at this stage will be more for you than for him

the rainmaker is excellent

Uhu · 12/11/2004 14:12

My twin DSs will be 10 months at Christmas and I did not want to buy them anything but DH thinks I'm being mean (Bah Humbug!). Therefore, for the peace, I've decided to buy them a cheap toy (£3-4) that they can share and an outfit each in the next size up (again, no more than £10 each). Even now, I still think that is too much but if it keeps the peace, what the hell.

Debbiethemum · 12/11/2004 14:20

A toy box (empty). Ikea do some bare pine ones that you can paint yourself. We did that for ds and plan on the same for dd this year.

Gobbledigook · 12/11/2004 14:24

PPH - A friend of mine had those eggs and I thought it was a really bizarre toy but all the kids always play with it! Even the 3 year olds!!

Gobbledigook · 12/11/2004 14:25

I'd get nothing probably but I like the toy box idea.

WestCountryLass · 12/11/2004 20:02

Playmat or gym, rattles, hand held bells or shakers, Nursery rhyme CD/tapes, clothes, soft/bath books.

For DSs first Xmas we gave him lots of stocking filler/bits and bobs type pressies.

charleepeters · 12/11/2004 20:47

Thanks for all the tips and sorry ladies who said buy him nothing but i think thats slightly mean, hes my first son its his first christmas im gonna but him something, dh and i have decided on a cute bauble with Jacks first christmas, also were gonna get some clothes and some toys to keep for when hes older. thanks again x

Definitely don't think he'll need anything now - guess you've already got rattles etc. But its a long time until his birthday so think ahead to what he might develop onto - soft books great, board books so you've got a selection for bedtime stories (he'll be happy with the same one every night but what about your sanity?), bath toys, blocks, stacking cups. One thing I did for DS was his own little photo album with maybe a dozen reprints of us, grandparents, pets etc. Might be nice for him once he's a few months older.

mummytummy · 12/11/2004 21:58

Does he have a savings accounts? We opened up accounts for both DDs and put money in for their first xmas. We also bought a giant teddy for DD1, which we are going to do for DD2 this year (she'll be 7 months at Xmas). Its a nice thing for their rooms, and they love the feel of them long before they are big enough to play with them properly.

dawnie1 · 12/11/2004 22:03

Last Xmas I got my dd an 'Oliver the Octopus' and she loved it then and still does now (she was 3 months last Xmas and is now almost 14 months). Its great, very bright colours, plays music, all the legs make different noises, a fantastic prezzie for young babies. I also got her a Maisie Mouse video which she loved even at 3 months and its still her favourite - very simple, bright colours, baby talk etc
