First DC is fast approaching 1 😳 no idea where the last year has gone but thats another story 😅😅

What care related things change at this point? I know I’ve read lots of guidelines that say “until they’re 1”.

Off the top of my head I’m thinking:

  • Change to whole cows milk as main drink (at least 350ml per day?)
  • Cut use of bottle
  • Don’t need to sterilise?
  • Can now have honey?

What else am I missing? 😊

Ooo following with interest as my DS is 1 in November. FTM and not sure how all this goes either!!

mynameiscalypso · 22/10/2021 10:14

The main one for us was that the daily guidelines re salt changed as they got bigger which meant so could relax a bit more about meals out etc or adding a pinch of salt to what I was cooking.

IcedCoffeeAlways · 22/10/2021 12:48

@DisneyGirl2387 it can be confusing can’t it? 😅

@mynameiscalypso Completely forgot about the salt guidelines changing! We don’t use much salt at home anyway but as you say, nice to be able to relax a bit more about meals out! 😊

Yes to the honey. Yes to the whole milk. I wouldnt get caught up on using bottles or not. I slowly took away the bottles over time from my DS. Hes 18mo now and still has a bottle before bed, he uses a 360 cup or an open cup the rest of the time. Tbh I stopped sterilising the moment mine was on the move. It just didnt seem to make much sense when he'd eat leaves and lick shoes.

@Letsallscreamatthesistene Completely agree about the sterilising 🤣🤣 I’m still dutifully doing his bottles but he’s been walking since 10 months and there’s not much in my house that hasn’t been licked or chewed so it’s definitely more sterilising out of habit than anything else 🤣🤣 Hes really not very attached to his bottles, he happily drinks milk from a beaker or a straw cup. He does still have a bottle before bed but I’ll try him with a cup and if he’s fine I’ll just get rid of the bottles 👍🏻

If you are still using formula then you need to sterilise. No more bottles or dummies. You can have little on in bed between Mum and Dad.

@Fallagain He’ll be coming off of his formula before I stop sterilising 😊 I didn’t realise that sleep guidelines changed at this age! I still don’t think I’d feel comfortable having him in our bed - DH is a very heavy sleeper and tends to move around a lot too! Yeah I remember reading about dummies being the same as bottle teats. DS doesn’t use one anyway so that’s one less thing to try and change 👍🏻

I had exactly the same thought OP when DD turned one and then I panicked because I realised I needed to stop using bottles and I hadn't started easing her off them yet! But we got there over a couple of months 😆 she's still using a dummy though. She loves it. Oops.

takealettermsjones · 23/10/2021 14:35

Oh the other thing is getting her using a spoon and fork more. Again it kind of hit me all of a sudden. She was using a spoon sometimes but mostly I was feeding her, or she'd use finger food. I had to make a conscious effort to start encouraging her to use the spoon herself. Definitely still a work in progress!

IcedCoffeeAlways · 23/10/2021 20:11

@takealettermsjones Haha 🤣 Yeah ive tried my best to start changing all these wee things but there’s bound to be something I’ve forgotten 🤣 Cutlery is a good one!! DS does use a spoon well and feeds himself his breakfast with a spoon each morning but definitely needs work with using a fork so I’ll introduce that more 😊

I would say no to honey Wink unless it's a big boy. For my small girl I think I'll wait until after 18months. You can use maple syrup instead

@grey12 Neither DH or I actually like honey and never have it at home so it’s unlikely he’ll have much anyway 😊 Have the odd good family recipe that has it in though so nice to be able to start giving him things like that 👍🏻
