My 5mo still drinks only 90 ml breast milk every 1.5 to 2 hrs

Hi Mumnetters,
I have recently realised that my 5mo dd still only drinks 90ml breast milk at once (I exclusively pump). She takes feed every 1.5 to 2 hours. I've tried giving her more but she just fiddles around and leaves anymore milk in the bottle. Sometimes it's even 60 ml. Also I'm still using the size 1 Tommie Tippie teat and she seems to be happy with it. I say that cz she sometimes finds the size 1 flow a bit much.

She's otherwise happy and is putting on weight. 6.2kgs at the start of 5 months.

I know every baby is different and there's no one size fits all but I wondered if this sounds normal and also if there's soemthing I should be doing to increase her intake.

She also drools and does the chewing action when she sees me having my meals. So I'm guessing I can start solids with her soon.

Thanks for any advice/ tips coming my way.

BF babies take roughly 25 floz in 24 hours so roughly 1 floz (30 ml) an hour so 90 mil or 3 floz every 2 hours is actually quite a lot Smile

How much expressed breast milk will my baby need from Kellymom might be helpful as well Smile

How much is she drinking at night? 90ml every 2 hours sounds fine, but if she'ss sleeping 12 hours a night maybe not? On the other hand, if she's doing the right nappies I would try not to worry - she sounds happy and well.

I absolutely hated the nappy advice btw, it makes no sense to me but I understand why they give it - there's not much else to tell you they're healthy except mother's instinct

I also ageee that sounds plenty. If you Google how much breastmilk does a baby need you’ll see what I mean. My understanding is that breastfed babies need less milk than formula fed babies so maybe you’ve heard formula fed babies taking more and so 90mls doesn’t seem much? I think that is because breastmilk contains more calories but don’t quote me x

If she’s gaining the right amount of weight she’s fine. If you weren’t expressing you’d have zero information about how much she was drinking so you would only have weight and nappies to go on. (As long as the nappies aren’t green you’re fine.)

This is how you tell if your older baby is getting enough BM Smile

Yes, the content of the BM changes to meet your babies needs unlike formula where the baby has to drink ever increasing amounts.

Hi @fiddlestick124, She takes 2 feeds at night mostly. So in total around 8-10 in a 24 hr period. Agreed, diaper watch is not the most fun activity but on it now, fulltime. I haven't paid close attention to the diapers yet, but it seems in line with the standards.

@panicbuyingsprout, Thanks a lot for the link. Noted and I'm chuffed that lo is taking enough according to this. Fun and games this guessing business. 😬

Aha! Now that makes a lot of sense. Glad to know it's all normal. I just followed the baby ques so far and fed her when she asked for it. Never really calculated but wanted to make sure she's taking enough! Thanks ever so much,

A happy mommy!

@ @DressedUpAtAnIv, that's so true. Thanks for the reassurance. I think the nappies are the right numbers so all good! ❤️

It only changes when feeding direct from the breast.

Tommy tippee bottles are great. If you wanted to try something different then give MAM or NUK bottles ago.
