DS 4.6 speech

Ds turned 4 in may and started reception in September. He's always had a few speech foibles but I'm starting to wonder if they are going to affect his development in school- he can't say his Rs which I know if fairly normal but he also uses "d" to replace "th", this came more noticeable recently when it came to reading as he became quite self conscious that he was saying "duh" instead of "the", a word which obviously comes up a lot! I want him to be confident when reading to people but also don't know if this is just something that will correct itself in time.

Really appreciate any similar experiences.

My ds started school in September too, and is about 5 months older than yours.
He pronounces "the" as "vuh"
He cannot make quite a few sounds such as "th" and he struggles with "L". He has improved lots in the last few months in particular and teachers aren't concerned.

My DD struggled to pronounce 'v' or 'w'. They generally come out as replaced by 'b'. I haven't been worried as I've seen improvement over time. So when I noticed it, she'd pronounce the 'v' in her name as a 'b'. Which she no longer does. We'd practise just for fun saying V for Victor, and she would literally say B for Bictor. She can now say this correctly, but for the life of her she can't say reward. She says 'rebord'. Again, I'm not worried. Like the other challenges she had, I feel she will just improve over time. I wouldn't worry too much, however maybe you could talk to his teacher to see what they think and whether there's anything that can be done to help him.
